Ultra Guggulow supplies a standardized extract of gum guggul resin (Gugulipid), an herb derived from the Commiphora mukul tree in India. Gugulipid is standardized at 2.5% guggulsterones, which are active ingredients present in the resin. Bioperine promotes absorption of nutrients in the GI tract.*

Gum Guggul
Gum guggul is related to myrrh gum and also to Boswellia serrata, another resinous herb prominent in the Ayurvedic materia medica. Gum guggul, often referred to simply as “guggul,” has been used in the Ayurvedic herbal tradition since at least 600 B.C. The herb is mentioned in the Vedas, the Holy Scriptures of India, which are estimated to date back anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 years.

Modern investigation into gum guggul began in 1964, with a series of tests conducted by G.V. Satyavati. The inspiration for this research is an Ayurvedic treatise written in Sanskrit that describes in detail a condition called “coating and obstruction of channels.” Impressed by the apparent analogy to the cardiovascular system, Satyavati and others initiated a series of tests to determine if gum guggul, which was mentioned in the treatise, would have any effect on blood lipid levels. This set the stage for an extensive series of studies on gum guggul’s pharmacology and clinical effects.

Guggulsterones
Systematic analysis of gum guggul resin carried out by Indian researchers in the 1980s identified the active ingredients as a group of lipid-based compounds called guggulsterols and guggulsterones. It was determined that two members of this group,Z-guggulsterone and E-guggulsterone, are largely responsible for the herb’s effect on cholesterol and blood fats. An extract standardized for guggulsterone content of gum guggul was then developed by the CDRI in Lucknow, India. This extract, called “Gugulipid,” is now the preferred form of gum guggul for use in clinical studies. Ultra Guggulow contains Gugulipid, standardized to supply 25 mg of guggulsterones per 1,000 mg of extract.*

Bioperine
Traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulas often include black pepper and long pepper as synergistic herbs. The active ingredient in both black pepper and long pepper is piperine, an alkaloid. Experiments carried out to evaluate the scientific basis for the use of peppers have shown that piperine significantly enhances bioavailability when consumed with other substances.*

Bioperine contains 95% piperine extracted from the fruits of black pepper. Several double-blind clinical studies have confirmed that Bioperine increases absorption of nutrients.*

Helps Maintain Normal Healthy Cholesterol Levels
The research of gum guggul over the last 30 years has produced a wealth of evidence establishing this herb’s beneficial effect on cholesterol and blood fats. The preliminary studies carried out by Satyavati and her colleagues were done on rabbits fed hydrogenated vegetable oil to artificially elevate cholesterol levels. In contrast to non-treated test subjects, rabbits given gum guggul had normal cholesterol and blood lipid levels and healthy blood vessels.*

A number of multicentric clinical trials have tested the efficacy of Gugulipid for maintaining normal cholesterol. The CDRI has conducted Phase 1 trials to establish the safety of the extract. Gugulipid has been found safe and free of unwanted effects on blood chemistry, liver function and the heart. Phase II trials confirmed Gugulipid’s effectiveness in normalizing total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides.*

SOD-Protecting, Antioxidant Action
In an animal study carried out by the CDRI, guggulsterones reversed the decrease in SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity that results from reduced blood flow to the heart. The researchers reported that “SOD was significantly protected by guggulsterone.” Increases in lipid peroxides (free-radical byproducts) and xanthine oxidase, an enzyme that produces oxygen free radicals, were also reversed. Although preliminary, these findings lend additional support to the use of Gugulipid for sustaining cardiovascular health.*

Capsule And Tablet Information
Q. What are your capsules made of?
A. Doctor's Best capsules are typical gelatin capsules, with the exception of select products now available in veggie cap form. They are made of gelatin from cattle, like the familiar "Knox gelatin" sold in grocery stores.

The gelatin used to make Doctor's Best's capsules is manufactured in accordance with strict guidelines that ensure it is BSE-free. The FDA and the supplement industry approved these guidelines. The gelatin is made only from cattle living in non-BSE countries. All Doctor's Best capsules are in full compliance with the FDA's September 1997 industry guide, The Sourcing and Processing of Gelatin to Reduce the Potential Risk Posed by Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy in FDA-Regulated Products for Human Use.

Q. How long does it take for a capsule to dissolve?
A. Approximately 30-45 minutes. For 2-piece gelatin capsule, the USP standard for maximum dissolution time is 45 minutes.

Q. How long does it take for a tablet to dissolve?

A. FDA Rules & Regulations require tablets to dissolve in 45 minutes or less. However, Doctor's Best sets its standards higher. They require that their tablets dissolve in 30 minutes or less. Every lot of products in tablet form is tested to verify that it dissolves in under 30 minutes.

Q. Can I find out how fast a capsule or tablet dissolves by dropping it in a glass of water or vinegar at home?

A. Testing dissolution times at home using vinegar is not an accurate way to learn what happens to capsules and tablets in your stomach. Because stomach acid is much stronger than vinegar, capsules and tablets dissolve much faster in the stomach than in a glass of water or vinegar. Also, the stomach continually "agitates" its contents, much like a washing machine does.
Vitamin And Dosage Intake
Q. Who determines what the daily dosage should be? And how is this done?
A. A panel of scientists at The Natural Academy of Sciences performs extensive research, ongoing clinical studies and scientific testing in order to determine the RDI (Recommended Daily Intake).

Q. I see that Silicon Dioxide has been used as an excipient in some of your products. Should I be concerned?

A. Silicon Dioxide is a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) food additive. Numerous studies have found the following:
The oral toxicity for humans would be greater than 350 grams in one dose based on allometric comparisons between the mice studied and humans.

A single dose of 2,500mg of amorphous polymeric silicon dioxide to human volunteers did not significantly raise the SiO2 excretion in the urine. This suggests poor absorption of silicon dioxide (Langendorf 1966).

Less than one one-hundredth (1/100th) of the dose was found in urine, suggesting extremely poor absorption (Langendorf 1966).

This would suggest that there is no scientific reason to eliminate silicon dioxide as an excipient at the very low levels found in dietary supplements.
Q. Why is silicon dioxide used as an excipient in Doctor’s Best products? Why are excipients used at all?
A. Silicon Dioxide is used as a flow agent to enable "sticky" substances to flow through the encapsulation equipment. If silicon dioxide were not used, other flow agents would have to be used which would actually increase the number of excipients found in a given product. Ideally, the fewer excipients used, the better.

Q. Is there a limit to how many vitamins can be taken safely in one day?
A. Our bodies need vitamins and minerals, and if taken in large amounts, vitamins and minerals can adversely affect health. Large amounts of anything can be toxic. Our best advice is to work with a nutritionally aware doctor and follow label directions.
