The DivaCup offers women convenience and peace of mind. Worn internally, it is positioned low in the vagina for a secure fit and easy removal. Designed to hold up to one full ounce, one can swim, run, backpack, travel and even wear it overnight without ever worrying about leaks.
The DivaCup comes in two models: 1, for women under 30 and women who have not given birth; and 2, for women over 30 or women who have given birth. The Model 1 cup is 1 11/16" (~4.3 cm) in diameter and the Model 2 cup is 1 13/16" (~4.6 cm) in diameter. This is the model 2 cup. It is important to use the right cup size to prevent leakage.
No More Hassle: Eliminates the need to spend time searching for a bathroom, hiding tampons or pads in pockets, or constantly worrying about leakage and unpleasant odors. It also works for light as well as heavy days, and there is no more guessing as to which kind of products to use on certain days or nights. Convenient: With nothing extra to buy and nothing to throw away, it is convenient and worry-free. Easy-To-Use: The most convenient way to deal with menstruation. It only requires emptying 2 to 4 times a day, depending on flow, and can be worn for an entire cycle up to 12 hours at a time, even overnight. Design: The innovative design features easy-grip ridges, convenient flow measurements, and a soft, flexible stem for comfort and easy removal. Designed to hold one full ounce (30 ml), it is capable of accommodating even the heaviest flows (an entire average cycle is 3 to 4 ounces or 90 to 120 ml). Toxic Shock Syndrome: The serious and sometimes fatal Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is caused by toxin-producing strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium and has been linked to the use of conventional, rayon-based tampons. The DivaCup is non-absorbent and and does not disturb the natural moisture level in the vagina. An increased risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is not associated with the use of menstrual cups.* Eco-Friendly: In 1998, 7 billion tampons and 12 billion sanitary pads and their packaging were disposed into landfills and sewage systems in the U.S. alone. With landfill and pollution problems on the rise, The DivaCup is committed to reducing the serious eco-footprint of feminine hygiene. The DivaCup is cleared for marketing by the FDA (USA) and currently holds a Health Canada medical device license.

How does The DivaCup work? The vagina is continually self-cleansing, washing away dead cells and bacteria. Tampons absorb the natural fluids that we need to keep the vagina clean and moist. The DivaCup is non-absorbent and simply collects the menstrual flow, leaving the natural moisture level in the vagina undisturbed.
The DivaCup holds one full ounce (30 ml) of fluid. Since the entire cycle is an average of 30-40 ml*, most women find that the cup is not even half full after 12 hours.
Can you feel The DivaCup when you're wearing it? Because The DivaCup is made of soft material that actually softens even more with your body heat, you cannot feel the cup at all. When tampons slip down, many women can feel them. The DivaCup is different, and is extremely comfortable.
Which model/size should I use? The DivaCup is available in two models:
Model 1: for women under 30 years old who have never had childbirth or c-sections.
Model 2: for women who have had vaginal childbirth or c-sections; and for women who are over 30 years old and never had childbirth.
The Model 1 cup is 1 11/16" (~4.3 cm) in diameter and the Model 2 cup is 1 13/16" (~4.6 cm) in diameter. Both cups are around 2 1/4" (~5.7 cm) in length in the body of the cup, with another 3/8" (~1 cm) stem (2 5/8" total length). The stem may be trimmed to adjust for comfort.
There is not a big difference between the two sizes--Model 1 is 1/8" (~0.3 cm) smaller--but it is important to use the recommended sizing to prevent leakage.
We recommend Model 2 if you are over 30 years old because as we age, our hips naturally widen and the vaginal muscles lose elasticity. Since it is the vaginal muscles which hold The DivaCup in place, it is important to use Model 2 if you are over 30, even if you have not had a vaginal childbirth or c-section.
Will The DivaCup work for an active lifestyle? Yes! It's fantastic for swimmers, outdoor enthusiasts, aerobic classes, cycling, travelers, campers, and so on. You will feel fresh, secure, and liberated. No feminine hygiene products to pack (or run out of). No worries about staying close to a bathroom. No restrictions on physical activity. And since you can wear The DivaCup longer than tampons or pads, you have the convenience of not having to think about your period all day long!
Does The DivaCup leak? According to consumer research, 60% of women experience leakage every month when using tampons and pads! With The DivaCup the majority of women feel secure without the hassle of worrying about leakage.
Many women don't believe it's possible for a feminine hygiene product to actually do its job and not leak. Believe it ladies! This product actually works. Our testimonial pages are just a small sample of the many thousands of satisfied users worldwide who all agree that The DivaCup is the best feminine hygiene product they have ever tried!
If any leaking occurs, it is usually because the cup is being worn too high, has not been rotated is not worn at the right angle, the cup size is too small (may need Model 2), or the muscle tone needs to be strengthened with kegel exercises (usually necessary after multiple vaginal childbirths).
Success with The DivaCup increases when the instructions are precisely followed. Sometimes it takes women one or two cycles to get the hang of it, but once they do it's very simple. Most women find that once they find the right position, it is not even necessary for a backup pad or liner.
How do I insert The DivaCup? (This is a condensed version of the usage guide. You will receive a full version with your purchase of The DivaCup)
Wash your hands well with warm water and soap. While sitting or standing in a comfortable position, insert your DivaCup according to the following instructions. | Step 1: Fold Moisten the rim of The DivaCup with water if needed. Press the sides of the cup together and then fold it in half again. | | Step 2: Hold Hold the folded sides firmly between your thumb and forefinger. The single curved edge should be facing away from your palm. | | Step 3: Insert With the vaginal muscles relaxed, gently separate the labia with your free hand and then push the curved edge of the folded DivaCup into the vaginal opening. | | | Step 4: Removal Wash your hands well with warm water and soap. Pull gently on the stem until you can reach the base of the cup. Pinch the base of the cup to release the seal, rotate, and continue to pull down to remove. The contents should not spill during removal. Simply empty the contents in the toilet, wash it well with hot soapy water, and reinsert. | How do I know when to empty The DivaCup? The DivaCup holds one ounce (30 ml). The entire average monthly flow is around 30 to 40 ml according to the Mayo Clinic. By monitoring the fullness of the cup, you will quickly learn how often to empty it according to your flow.
The DivaCup must be emptied 2-4 times a day (depending on your flow) and can be worn up to 12 hours overnight. Most women only need to empty it in the morning and in the evening.
If you have fairly regular flows you can even insert The DivaCup right before your period to ensure that there are no messy leaks. On the occasion you need to empty it in a public washroom, use a dry or damp tissue to clean the cup, and wash well with hot soapy water at the next convenient time.
It should not be used as a birth control method and does not protect you from Sexually Transmitted Diseases. It is not necessary to remove it for urination or bowel movements; however, The DivaCup must be removed prior to intercourse.
What if I cannot remove The DivaCup? If you are unable to remove the DivaCup because it has moved up towards the cervix, do not panic. Keep your vaginal muscles relaxed. Squat, with your buttocks resting on your heels (to shorten the vaginal canal). Insert your fingers (similar to removing a diaphragm) and bear down with your stomach muscles until you can reach the cup.
Alternatively, gravity should bring the cup back down in several hours. In the rare case that you are still unable to remove the cup after 12 hours, call our customer service line during business hours or seek medical advice.
I am allergic to latex rubber, will I be allergic to The DivaCup? Synthetic latex rubber and natural latex or gum rubber contain a protein called "nitrosomine". This is the chemical that produces the allergic reactions that many people have to latex. The DivaCup is made from durable medical grade silicone, which is 100% hypoallergenic and suitable for women with latex allergies (nitrosomine and latex free).
Is The DivaCup sanitary? The DivaCup is made from medical grade silicone, which is 100% hypoallergenic, latex-free and odorless. It is non-absorbent and does not disrupt the natural vaginal environment. The silicone in The DivaCup is also antibacterial, and does not support bacterial growth.
Remember to wash your hands before inserting and removing your DivaCup. Wash your DivaCup well in hot soapy water at least twice a day. It can also be boiled when necessary.
What regulations or standards does The DivaCup have to meet? The DivaCup is approved by the FDA in the United States, and holds a current Health Canada medical device license. It is also available for sale in many other countries around the world including any country in the European Union.
Diva International Inc. is also ISO 13485 certified to meet the new medical device requirements of Health Canada as of January 1st, 2003. This certification ensures that The DivaCup is manufactured, packaged, and sold following specific procedures to ensure the highest quality, safety and effectiveness of the product.
ISO 13485 is a Quality Standard governed by the International Organization of Standardization based out of Geneva, Switzerland, and is recognized and practiced in over 160 countries around the world. ISO 13485 is the quality standard for medical devices which is designed to ensure that companies follow strict guidelines to ensure the highest quality of their products, as well as meeting applicable government requirements.
What about Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)? Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is considered a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by toxin-producing strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium. TSS has been linked to high absorbency and prolonged use of tampons. There are now regulations in labeling for tampon absorbency to decrease the risk of TSS.
Symptoms of TSS often mimic the flu and can include sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, or a rash that looks like a sunburn during your period or a few days after.
Remember that the vagina is continually self-cleansing. The DivaCup is only a receptacle, and does not disturb the natural moisture level in the vagina. An increased risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is not associated with the use of menstrual cups.
Can The DivaCup be used with the NuvaRing or an IUD? We suggest you consult your physician regarding your use of an IUD along with The DivaCup. However, many of our customers use The DivaCup and the NuvaRing and have not reported any problems.
There is a possibility that the NuvaRing can become dislodged while using any kind of internal feminine hygiene protection. Consequently, we recommend that you consult your physician before use of any kind of internal feminine hygiene product, including a menstrual cup.
Can menstrual cups cause retrograde menstruation or be harmful to women suffering from endometriosis? The DivaCup is worn low in the vaginal canal collecting the flow far away from the cervix. It is highly unlikely that The DivaCup would cause retrograde menstruation. Retrograde menstruation does not refer to the flow going upwards from the vagina into the cervix, but actually from the uterus into the fallopian tubes. In this case, the actual form of feminine protection used would have no impact on retrograde menstruation. As we mentioned earlier, this happens in the majority of women.
We have had many customers over the years that suffer from severe endometriosis (including some doctors) who have reported amazing success with The DivaCup and even some relief. Since endometriosis causes heavy bleeding, our customers report that The DivaCup is able to support their very heavy flows with minimal to no leakage.
We hope that after learning more about endometriosis you will feel comfortable in considering menstrual cups as an ideal option.
Can it be worn for women with a tipped cervix? Yes, The DivaCup can be worn for women with a tipped cervix. Since it is worn lower in the canal it does not interfere with the position of the cervix. |
