Trimethylglycine is a powerful methylating agent and assists the metabolization of homocysteine into methionine, resulting in the production of DMG (dimethylglycine). Further metabolism of TMG produces the enzyme methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (the active form of folic acid). Studies have shown cerebrospinal fluid levels of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) to be low in patients with methyltetrahydrofolate reductase enzyme deficiency resulting in demyelination in the brain and degeneration of the spinal cord.* TMG is also called betaine, but is not the same as betaine hydrochloride.
