An orthopedic surgeon, a film producer, and a corporate strategist walk into a bar...wait, no, they start a beverage company...what happens? A revolution, that's what. In 2004, Dr. Alex Hughes, Josh Simon, and Dayton Miller embarked on a mission: to improve the lives of their friends and family. Although the goal was simple, the results of their venture would forever change the beverage industry.
In medical school, Dr. Alex realized that many of the powerful, all-natural ingredients he used to treat patients were available to the public, yet not widely known about or utilized. This observation sparked an idea: what if he could use these potent ingredients in the form of innovative beverages, making their health benefits accessible to everyone? Consumers were still relying on centuries old vitamin-based ingredients to improve their health and it was time to give them products with real results.
While conducting the initial research in a laboratory built in his kitchen, there were many spills and explosions, but also plenty of breakthroughs. Dr. Alex's experiments were revolutionary--bringing technology, ingredients, and functionality never before seen to the beverage industry. With long-time friends Josh and Dayton, Function Drinks launched in southern California in mid-2005. Instantly, the company gained a strong consumer following, including many celebrity fans like singer Fergie of the Black-Eyed Peas and NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal.
Today, the function line-up--sold worldwide--consists of ten powerful beverages delivering eight relevant functionalities with concrete and proven results. And thankfully for Dr. Alex's neighbors, the beverages are now developed with a team of food scientists in sophisticated beverage laboratories. |

With a technical and sophisticated look, Function is drawing more attention than ever on the shelves. Unified under the banner of concrete science, each drink touts its own unique and powerful functionality. The presence of the "created by physicians" seal, displayed on the front of all Function drinks, is serious business. It's one of the many things that sets them apart from the other so-called functional drinks on the market.
The presence of their seal means a commitment to:
- Producing products that reflect the latest understanding of health, science, and physiology
- Constantly evaluating and updating products to reflect health innovations or breakthroughs
- Developing products founded in mainstream, proven clinical science
- Creating products with the highest quality natural ingredients used by doctors everyday

Shock Sports is revolutionary. It combines powerful muscle and cortisol-targeted ingredients with a proprietary electrolyte replacement system to support the body's natural ability to recover from intense activity. Shock Sports is the perfect drink for anyone who loves pushing the envelope. Perform better, feel better, and don't let soreness slow you down.*
The physicians at Function Drinks combined an advanced understanding of exercise physiology and muscle recovery with proprietary systems for creating stable drinks that contain critical recovery supplements never before used in beverages.*
During intense periods of exercise, your body goes through a series of changes: your body loses fluids and electrolytes, your metabolism produces lactic acid as it cycles between aerobic and anaerobic metabolic conditions (depending on the minute to minute conditions within your muscles), muscle glycogen stores are depleted, micro-fibril muscle tears are generated, and supra-physiologic forces are generated across joint surfaces for brief periods of time. This results in dehydration, electrolyte shifts, glycogen depletion, damaged muscles, local and systemic inflammation, and pain. Shock Sports systematically supports the body's ability to address these factors.*
Preventing and recovering from dehydration and electrolyte shifts involves ingesting water-based liquids containing the right amount of electrolytes. Studies have shown that the fastest rehydration occurs by ingesting 7% carbohydrate by mass which contains at least 50% glucose in a dilute physiologic electrolyte base. In other words, the right ratio of glucose and electrolytes utilizes all channels of absorption in the gastrointestinal tract for the most efficient absorption of fluids. Too many electrolytes can cause abdominal cramping and other side effects, so getting it right is important.*
Potassium is critical for normal functionality of muscle and energy pathways. The potassium phosphate found in Shock Sports has the added benefit of gently replenishing potassium losses and supplementing phosphate. Phosphates are the building blocks of the energy molecule ATP. In addition, some studies have linked phosphate supplementation with supporting natural oxygen delivery to muscles–important for maintenance of aerobic metabolism. During brief periods of increased demands (sprinting, jumps, tricks, intense muscle contraction, etc.), the body's metabolism shifts to anaerobic and produces lactic acid as a byproduct of energy generation. This leads to muscle irritation, inflammation, and eventually soreness.*
Intense athletic activity or long periods of repetitiveendurance sports also cause wear related micro-fibril muscle tears. Microfibrils are the individual motor units that comprise our muscles. After rigorous activity, the repair of torn microfibrils can cause a fair degree of metabolic stress, which is experienced as soreness. Metabolic stress causes the brain to signal the adrenal gland to produce the catabolic (versus anabolic which means "to build") systemic hormone cortisol to meet the body's more pressing needs. In other words, once normal carbohydrate and glycogen energy stores are exhausted, other sources of energy (including muscle) must be mobilized for energy use before muscle healing or rebuilding can occur. Under these high cortisol conditions, it is difficult for muscle to rebuild. Shock Sports contains Soy PS which supports the body's natural ability to appropriately regulate cortisol and in turn, aids muscle recovery.* |
