FUNCTIONS
Selenomethionine is a molecularly integrated single chemical entity, containing selenium in place of sulfur in the molecule of the essential amino acid, methionine. This compound is directly incorporated into the body proteins by metabolic pathways similar to those for methionine.

Selenium is required by the body in very small amounts for proper growth and functioning. Selenium is also necessary for several human biologic processes, including immune response and thyroid function.* Besides being a powerful antioxidant, several human studies have linked selenium supplementation to a significant decrease in the occurrence of certain types of cancer such as prostate, lung, and colorectal, and it plays a key role in resistance to viral infections.*

While most people get proper amounts of selenium through their diet, certain factors may create shortages in the body.  Factors such as smoking and widespread infections can lead to decreases in selenium.
