Russian Choice Immune is a preparation of cell-wall fragments made from a specific strain of lactobacillus, first identified in the 1980s by Russian researchers as Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp bulgaricus. More precise modern technology has allowed us to identify it as a particular strain of Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Probiotic bacteria are known to stimulate both the innate and adaptive immune systems, and recently some scientists have begun calling them ‘immunobiotics’.*

The evolution of the product that is now Russian Choice Immune began when Bulgarian researchers found strains of lactobacilli capable of effectively stimulating both cellular and humoral immunity. Later in the 1980s, Russian researchers discovered the immune-enhancing properties of certain lactobacillus species, after the Russian military directed them to develop protection against biological warfare agents.*

Taking note of the folk lore regarding the immune-stimulating properties of cultured milk products, Russian microbiologists discovered species of Lactobacillus bulgaricus with these properties.*

The researchers then looked for ways to enhance this immune activity, and discovered that if they lysed (broke apart) the lactobacilli, the resulting cell walls and cell wall fractions were much more powerful than the cultured milk products. They perfected the process of breaking the lactobacillus cell walls, ultimately producing uniquely potent products containing these cell wall fragments. When the Russian Choice Immune immunobiotic lactobacilli are lysed, the immune-active proteins that are usually sequestered inside the cells have unimpeded access to trigger and magnify the immune system response. Although probiotics and cultured milk products have immune supporting properties, Russian Choice Immune is a much more powerful immune system stimulator.*

These immunobiotic lactobacilli cell-wall fragments were used in clinical trials in 1992 at the State Cancer Hospital in St. Petersburg, Russia, in a wide variety of in vivo situations requiring immune system support. The substance was also used to boost the immune systems of patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, allowing the patients to complete their therapies without the usual debilitating effects. The doctors reported that the patients taking the intestinal bacteria cell-wall fragments looked and felt better, and had more energy. Since then, cell wall fragments of lactobacillus strains have been used in Europe as immune stimulators for many years, and have consistently demonstrated efficacy.*

Following in this tradition, Nutricology now offers Russian Choice Immune in the United States. These lactobacillus cell-wall fragment materials have been used for twenty years in Russia and over five years in the USA, and shown to be generally safe, even at high doses of up to 15 grams per day.

Research suggests these cell-wall fragments may stimulate the innate immunity, the "first responder" in the immune system hierarchy, helping to magnify the immediate response of the immune system. Because they can drive mucosal immune mechanisms, immunobiotic cell wall fragments may also have effects beyond their location in the gut. They may activate and regulate the common mucosal immune apparatus and help restore mucosal T cell balance, which can potentially enhance immunomodulation at distant mucosal sites.*

The possible mechanisms of action include activating Peyer’s patch T cells, potentially stimulating the circulating pool of T-lymphocytes and macrophage phagocytosis; and changing the cytokine balance, inducing TH1 cell-dependent activation of neutrophils, increasing INF-γ and decreasing IL-4, and enabling TH1 and TH2 cytokine response.*

These cell wall fragments will not directly supplement the local live gut flora, but they may downregulate mucosal secretions and promote a healthy gut environment. By activating the local immune response, they enhance the natural repair mechanisms of intestinal villi cells, and potentially support adhesion and growth of friendly bacteria.*

Hypoallergenic Defined

According to Taber’s Medical Dictionary, “hypoallergenic” is defined as: “Diminished potential for causing an allergic reaction”. We define hypoallergenic as “free of all common allergens,” specifically: wheat, corn, soy, gluten, yeast, dairy, and eggs. Many very sensitive individuals who react to supplements in general are able to tolerate NutriCology products.

Since our inception in 1979 we have been using only the purest, and whenever possible, the lowest allergy potential natural ingredients. While many of the nutrients in our formulas are synthesized from natural substances (plant sources), which as a whole may contain antigens, the synthesizing process removes the molecules of the desired nutrient from the original substance, and in the processing, a great percentage of the antigens and allergens are left behind. The final material then has extremely low allergy potential.

This is not to say that no one will react to any of our hypoallergenic formulas, as some extremely sensitive people may. However, the potential for an allergic reaction is low, and the feedback from many of our extremely allergic and sensitive customers is that NutriCology supplements are often the only products they are able to tolerate.

New Allergen Labeling Regulations
As a result of the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004, effective January 1, 2006, the FDA requires manufacturers to identify the presence of eight major food allergens on all product labels.

The term “major food allergen” means any of the following:
• milk
• egg
• fish
• crustacean shellfish
• tree nuts
• peanuts
• wheat
• soybeans
• any ingredient derived from the above listed foods

It is important to understand that while an ingredient may have been derived from a common allergen, we are required by law to list that allergen on the label as a source of the ingredient, even if it does not contain any of the actual substance. For example, 100%-pure glucosamine sulfate does not contain any actual shellfish, but we are required to indicate the source material (shrimp, crab, lobster) on the label.

Furthermore, the following is a list of inactive ingredients used in some of our products. These may be called fillers and/or excipients as defined by the Food Chemical Codex. These are nutrient compounds which are utilized for their physical properties to aid in the supplement production process. They are derived from edible sources and are generally free of common allergens. To determine which natural additives are included in a specific product, please refer to the supplement facts panel.

Cellulose Powder is derived from fibrous plant material, is insoluble in water and is used as a filler. In addition to being used as a filler, cellulose powder is sold as an individual supplement as a pure insoluble fiber, and is extremely well tolerated.

Silicon Dioxide, or silica, is one of the most common chemical compounds. Silica plays an important role in biological processes. Most rocks and minerals are made of silicon dioxide and other minerals. Silica is insoluble in water and is used for its drying properties.

Stearic Acid is an 18 carbon, naturally occurring saturated fatty acid. It is a component of membrane structure and is utilized for its lubricating properties.

Magnesium Stearate contains stearic acid and magnesium palmitate, which is magnesium salt of a 16 carbon saturated fatty acid, also common in membrane structure. It is also utilized for its lubricating properties.

Dicalcium phosphate (calcium phosphate, dibasic) is a white, odorless, tasteless powder that is stable in air. It is practically insoluble in water, but is readily soluble in hydrochloric acid.

L-leucine is an essential branched-chain amino acid, found in almost all animal and vegetable proteins. As an excipient in our formulas, pharmaceutical grade L-leucine is presented in minute amounts and is used as a lubricant.
