Licorice contains triterpenoid saponins, notably glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid, as well as a fair amount of flavonoids and flavones like liquiritin and numerous chalcones and isoflavones. Licorice is covered by a positive Commission E monograph and can be used for catarrh of the upper respiratory tract as well as gastric and duodenal ulcers in Germany as an "OTC" medicine.*

Oregano supports healthy immune system function, supports the GI tract, and maintains a healthy inflammatory response to seasonal stressors. It is loaded with volatile oils, and it is thought that the anti-microbial action of these oils in the lungs is achieved when they are exhaled after being metabolized in the bloodstream.*

Osha Root supports the functions of the mucus membrances and the upper respiratory system. Like oregano, it contains many volatile oils. It is noted for its ability to elevate body temperature and induce sweating, which may explain its ability to modulate immune function. The extract also has a local anesthetic effect for which it is well known in Native American cultures, where it is used as a gargle for sore throats.*

Schizandra supports healthy liver function and helps naturally balance endocrine functions. It is classified as an adaptogenic herb, which means it is completely non-toxic to the human body and helps balance and normalize the body's systems, leading to homeostasis and health.*

Chinese Skullcap provides antioxidant protection and supports healthy liver and immune function. The plant is very chemically complex, containing many flavones (antioxidants). The flavones of particular interest have been Baicalin and Baicalein. These antioxidants appear to downregulate the effects of oxidative stress on various tissues in the body including the liver.*

St. John's Wort promotes the body's nerve response during injury and trauma, promotes adaption to stress, and encourages healthy mental attitudes. The flowers contain many antioxidants such as Rutin, Quercitin, and Lutein, which provide important protection from free radical damage.*
