How Does It Work?
All of the ingredients in Remember! Mental Sharpness Formula have been studied in human trials for supportive effects on memory and mental acuity associated with aging. This formula combines ingredients specifically selected to provide support for both immediate and long-term concerns. Bacopa monnieri and Ginkgo biloba both provide immediate supportive benefits for mild memory problems associated with aging. Vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folic acid provide brain support for long term health. Alpha lipoic acid provides both immediate and long-term health effects.*

Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a coenzyme that has extremely potent biologic antioxidant activity, antioxidant recycling activity, and activity in enhancing biologic energy productions. ALA is soluble in both water and fat, enters cells and tissues in a highly usable form, and is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. Alpha lipoic acid has been studied for its support of healthy memory and mental focus.*

A recent animal study demonstrated ALA's antioxidant recycling activity. Dietary supplementation with ALA for 2 weeks completely reversed age-associated oxidative stress in elderly small mammals.*

An open observational clinical study examined the effect of supplemental ALA on older adults. The subjects received 600 mg of ALA daily. The subjects showed significant improvement in memory and other brain health support.*

Bacopa monnieri
Bacopa grows in India and has a long history of folk use. The herb is supportive of healthy memory and focus. Bacopa has antioxidant properties and supports healthy parasympathetic nervous system activity.*

In a recent randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind study, Bacopa was compared to a placebo in its support of healthy memory and cognitive function. Healthy adults between the ages of 40 and 65 were randomized to receive either Bacopa or placebo. Testing on attention, memory storage, and memory retrieval was completed three times within the study period. The results demonstrated that the Bacopa provided more support in remembering new information than the group taking the placebo.*

Ginkgo biloba
Ginkgo has been well studied for its supportive effect on neurologic processes and cerebral health. Flavonoid and ginkoloid components are involved in free radical scavenging and antioxidant activity, resulting in support of healthy cognitive function. Additionally, research has determined that ginkgo provides support of healthy platelet and healthy parasympathetic nervous system function.*

In a recent randomized, double blind, placebo controlled crossover study, healthy volunteers were given either ginkgo or placebo for two days. Following baseline measurements, testing was completed at the study's completion. The results demonstrated that ginkgo provided support for healthy memory.*

A placebo controlled, multi-dose, double blind, balanced, crossover study examined the effect of ginkgo on four cognitive measurements in healthy volunteers. Speed of attention, accuracy of attention, speed of memory, and quality of memory were assessed prior to dosing and at established times thereafter. Compared with placebo, ginkgo provided support of several cognitive measures. The most striking of these was support of the 'speed of attention' score.*

Ginkgo has also been studied in older adults. The results showed that ginkgo provided support of healthy cognitive functions, while showing very low rates of adverse effects.*

Vitamin B6 and B12
Vitamins B6 and B12 are water-soluble vitamins that perform a wide variety of supportive functions and are essential for good health. Both of these vitamins help support healthy nerve cells. Vitamins B6 and B12 also support healthy homocysteine levels.*

In a study of healthy, older men (aged 70 to 79), vitamin B6 supplementation was found to provide support for long-term memory storage and recall.*

Two recent studies have demonstrated that giving supplemental vitamin B12 supports healthy memory and cognitive function.*

Folic Acid
Folic acid, another water-soluble B vitamin, has long been recognized as a vital nutrient for support of healthy brain and spinal cord function. Research has demonstrated that folic acid is also supportive of healthy homocysteine levels. Scientists have recognized that individuals with low folic acid serum levels can exhibit health problems.*

An ongoing, large, multi-center study is examining the role of folic acid in age-related memory loss. This study is examining over 600 older adult, volunteer participants. The researchers directing the study are collecting periodic blood samples, data on language and emotional status, and, at death, voluntary donation of the subjects' brain for postmortem study. The results, to date, have demonstrated that subjects with high folic acid levels showed healthy brain supportive effects.*

Good health doesn't have to be complicated. There are plenty of common-sense steps we can all follow to live better, more active, and fuller lives.

Eat right
We hear this so often it almost loses meaning. Eating right should mean adding things to your diet--more veggies, more fruits, more rich-tasting high-fiber breads and grains. However, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up chocolate. After all, there's plenty of beneficial flavonoids in those dark chocolate bars, right? You may just not want to eat chocolate at every meal. Instead of swearing off your favorite (but not healthy) meal forever, try just cutting it down to once or twice a month--make it a treat. As you incorporate more healthy, whole foods into your diet, you'll probably find yourself craving them instead of the bad stuff.

Exercise daily
You don't have to run a marathon or lift your neighbor's house. But, you can start parking a little further away at work each day. Begin taking break time walks, especially if the weather is nice. Dust off that bicycle and see if your friends would like to go for a spin. Almost every town has a dedicated group of folks who do some form of fun exercise. Whatever you do, don't overdo it right off the bat, and choose something you really enjoy. Kava - For reasons similar to benzodiazepines, it is recommended to avoid taking kava with buspirone unless otherwise directed by a licensed health care professional.
St. John's Wort, Ginkgo Biloba - Concurrent use of St. John's Wort and buspirone and St. John's Wort and Ginkgo Biloba with buspirone  has resulted in mild serotonin syndrome and should be avoided unless directed by a licensed health care professional.
Grapefruit Juice - Concomitant administration of buspirone and grapefruit juice should be avoided as it increased the concentration of buspirone in the blood.

Vitamin B6 and E - Reported to effectively treat risperidone -related neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Glycine - Glycine in combination with antiphychotic treatment has shown significant effects on the effectiveness of these drugs. While adjunctive glycine treatment has been shown to improve negative symptoms in combination with clozapine, olanzapine, and risperidone. Additional studies have shown it to be ineffective in combination with clozapine.

Supplementation with glycine in combination with an antipsychotic should only be done under the supervision of a health care professional.

Anti-Seizure 
 
 [Tegretol®(carbamazepine), Dilantin®(phenytoin), phenobarbital and Mysoline®(primidone). Depakene®(valproic acid) and Depakote®(divalproex) are also anticonvulsant drugs.]Magnesium, Black Pepper, and Caffeine - Concomitant administration of phenytoin (Dilantin®) or phenobarbital with magnesium oxide may lower magnesium oxide's absorption. Concomitant administration of Dilantin® and black pepper and/or long pepper may cause the phenytoin to be absorbed more rapidly and eliminated more slowly. Phenytoin also increases the metabolism and loss of caffeine from the body.
Benzodiazepines
Kava - Due to the similarity of effects, it is usually recommended to avoid taking Kava with Benzodiazepines unless otherwise directed by a licensed health care professional.
St. John's Wort - Concomitant administration of St. John's Wort with alprazolam and should be avoided unless otherwise directed by a licensed health care professional.
Beta-BlockersPotassium - Concomitant use of certain Beta-Blockers may increase potassium levels.
Pepper (Piper Nigrum, Piper Longum) - In single dose human study, piperine, a chemical found in black pepper and long pepper, was reported to increase blood levels of propranolol, which could increase the activity and risks of the drug's side effects.
Antacids - One study showed a reduction in absorption of Sotalol(Betapace®) when taken concomitantly with an aluminum oxide or magnesium hydroxide antacid. This interaction can be avoided by taking the medication two hours apart.
Magnesium - Magnesium has been effectively used to treat heart arrythmias that have resulted from administration of Sotalol(Betapace®).
Calcium Channel BlockersCalcium - High level calcium supplementation may reverse the blood pressure-lowering actions of some calcium channel blocker drugs.
Vitamin D - Vitamin D may interfere with the effectiveness of verapamil.
St. John's Wort - A recent study showed that St. John's Wort decreased the bioavailability of R- and S-verapamil.
Fruit Juices - Ingestion of grapefruit, grapefruit juice, and grapefruit products has been shown to increase the adverse effects of calcium channel blockers or similar drugs.
Diuretics, Potassium-Sparing

HIV AntiviralsSt. John's Wort - St. John's Wort has been shown to speed up the elimination of indinavir which may result in resistance to the drug. St. John's Wort should not be taken concomitantly with HIV Antivirals.
Sho-Saiko-To - This herbal medicine has been shown to enhance the antiviral activity of lamivudine.
Carnitine- Depletion of Carnitine levels may be responsible for muscle and nerve damage in patients on Antiviral therapies. Canitine supplementation is recommended.
Antioxidants- A small study showed a positive effect of antioxidant supplementation on hyperlactatemia (elevated levels of lactate in the systemic circulation) in patients on long-term Antiviral therapy.
N-Aceylt Cysteine- Studies have shown supplementation a NAC during Antiviral therapy may reduce AZT toxicity.
Vitamins E and C- Supplementation with Vitamin E has shown to improve  the efficacy of AZT and  supplementation with Vitamins E and C may reduce AZT-related cellular damage. 
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)Copper - Copper may enhance the anti-inflammatory effects of NSAIDs. Indomethacin may cause sodium and water retention.
Non-Narcotic Pain Relievers 
[Imitrex®(sumitriptan), Ultram®(tramadol)]St. John's Wort - Potential interactions may occur. Concomitant administration is not advised unless prescribed by a health care professional.
Oral ContraceptivesSt. John's Wort - Concomitant use of St. John's Wort and oral contraceptives may reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptives and cause breakthrough bleeding.
Serum Iron and Copper - Oral contraceptive use has been associated with an increase in iron and copper levels.
Respiratory CorticosteroidsCalcium - Calcium absorption was reduced following administration of oral beclomethasone (inhaler), a respiratory steroid similar to Flonase.
Synthetic ThyroidIron and Soy - Iron supplements and soy products taken at the same time as thyroid hormone replacement may interfere with absorption. Thyroid hormone absorption is increased when taken on an empty stomach. Thyroid hormones should be taken an hour before eating, at the same time every day.

For support of overall health in any individual, the appropriate comprehensive age- and gender-specific multiple formula, flax oil, and multiple antioxidant formula are recommended. However, for a specific potential deficiency, individuals may add single ingredient supplements to assure repletion. It is important to consider the quality and bioavailability of vitamin and mineral supplements used for these purposes.

Mental Focus And Memory
Age related mental focus and memory loss
Aging is sometimes associated with increased memory recall time and increased incidence of misplaced articles. Recent study has demonstrated that these types of memory age-related declines may be due to a decrease in the efficiency of short-term memory retrieval. These changes are hormonal in nature and are not considered diseases.*

Women entering menopause often report a decrease in short-term memory and difficulty in concentrating on linear, logical tasks. Although research into this association is limited, fluctuation of estrogens is thought to be responsible.*

Certain disorders may also be responsible for temporary memory loss, such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, B vitamin deficiencies, and the side effects of certain medications, such as lipid lowering statins. These problems usually resolve with treatment of the underlying disorder. Individuals with serious concerns about their memory, focus, and concentration should have these symptoms evaluated by a healthcare practitioner to rule out potential illnesses as causative factors.*

Alzheimer's disease and other dementias
Dementia is a brain disorder resulting in severe memory loss and impairment in cognitive function. Alzheimer's disease, the most common dementia, is an irreversible, progressive disorder in which brain cells slowly deteriorate, resulting in the loss of primarily memory, judgment and reasoning, movement coordination, and pattern recognition. It is an illness and is not considered a normal consequence of aging.*

The brain tissue of people who have died from Alzheimer's disease contains abnormal clumps called amyloid plaques and bundles of fibers, called neurofibrillary tangles. These plaques and tangles are considered the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. There is a loss of nerve cells in areas of the brain that are vital to memory and other mental abilities. There also are lower levels of acetylcholine in the cerebral cortex, a chemical in the brain that carries complex messages back and forth between nerve cells.*

There are numerous types of dementia. Some of the more commonly noted irreversible dementias include Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, stroke, multi-infarct dementia, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and alcoholism. Some treatable and reversible dementias include depression and B vitamin deficiency.*

While the exact cause of Alzheimer's disease is unclear, some associated factors have been determined. Age is the highest risk factor for developing the disease. Most individuals with Alzheimer's are over 65, with the number of people doubling every 5 years thereafter.*

Elevated homocysteine levels are noted in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, with severity of symptoms correlating with higher levels of homocysteine. Homocysteine irritates vascular walls, promotes cell death, and increases platelet aggregation. Researchers have theorized that keeping homocysteine levels within healthy limits may lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease.*

Differentiation between age-related memory loss and Alzheimer's disease and other dementias

According to the Alzheimer's Association, the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are much more severe than age-related memory problems. Alzheimer's disease affects communication, learning, thinking, reasoning, and impacts a person's work and social life.*
