Osha root is a member of the Carrot or Apiaceae family of plants and is also known as Colorado Cough Root, Chuchupate and Mountain Lovage, among many other regional names. Osha Root contains a number of volatile oils including camphor. It is noted for its ability to elevate body temperature and induce sweating (diaphoretic) which may explain its ability to modulate immune function. The extract also has a local anesthetic effect for which it is well known in Native American cultures as a gargle for sore throats.*
Goldenseal is a member of the buttercup or Ranunculaceae family. The root and rhizomes are highly concentrated in isoquinoline alkaloids or protoberberines namely Hydrastine (3.2- 4.%), Bereberine (2-4.5%), and Canadine (0.5-1%). The known actions of these constituents are vast affecting the immune system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, nervous system and mucosal membranes in general. There have been numerous studies validating the antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity of these chemicals.*
Licorice contains triterpenoid saponins notably glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinicacid as well as a fair amount of flavonoids and flavones like liquiritin and numerous chalcones and isoflavones. Licorice is covered by a positive Commission E monograph and can be used for catarrh of the upper respiratory tract as well as gastric and duodenal ulcers in Germany as an "OTC" medicine. Although there have been numerous studies conducted on animals and humans involving both isolated chemicals from licorice and various preparations more research is needed to determine the exact mechanism of the various actions of Licorice.*
Oregano is loaded with volatile oils such as Carvacrol, Thymol, Eugenol and 1,8 cineole. The plant also contains appreciable amounts of Rosmarinic acid and other antioxidants. The essential oils have been tested almost exclusively in vitro for pharmacological activity and though there have been some in vivo studies, wide differences in test parameters and the use of adulterated and synthetic compounds make test results difficult to compare. It is thought that the anti-microbial action of essential oils in the lungs is achieved when they are exhaled after being metabolized in the bloodstream.
