An orthopedic surgeon, a film producer, and a corporate strategist walk into a bar...wait, no, they start a beverage company...what happens? A revolution, that's what.

In 2004, Dr. Alex Hughes, Josh Simon, and Dayton Miller embarked on a mission: to improve the lives of their friends and family. Although the goal was simple, the results of their venture would forever change the beverage industry.

In medical school, Dr. Alex realized that many of the powerful, all-natural ingredients he used to treat patients were available to the public, yet not widely known about or utilized. This observation sparked an idea: what if he could use these potent ingredients in the form of innovative beverages, making their health benefits accessible to everyone? Consumers were still relying on centuries old vitamin-based ingredients to improve their health and it was time to give them products with real results.

While conducting the initial research in a laboratory built in his kitchen, there were many spills and explosions, but also plenty of breakthroughs. Dr. Alex's experiments were revolutionary--bringing technology, ingredients, and functionality never before seen to the beverage industry. With long-time friends Josh and Dayton, Function Drinks launched in southern California in mid-2005. Instantly, the company gained a strong consumer following, including many celebrity fans like singer Fergie of the Black-Eyed Peas and NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal.

Today, the function line-up--sold worldwide--consists of ten powerful beverages delivering eight relevant functionalities with concrete and proven results. And thankfully for Dr. Alex's neighbors, the beverages are now developed with a team of food scientists in sophisticated beverage laboratories.

Dayton Miller: Founder, Chairman, CEO
Dayton Miller is co-founder and Chairman & CEO of Function Drinks. Prior to Function Drinks, Miller held the position of director of corporate strategic planning at the Walt Disney Company where he was responsible for devising long term business strategies, problem-solving for existing operations, and executing the company’s acquisition and investment activities. During his tenure at Walt Disney Co, he shepherded deals which included the $2.6 billion sale of ABC radio group, the sale of the Mighty Ducks hockey team, and led the purchase of Indian cable channel Hungama TV. He began his career as an analyst in investment banking and spent time as a management consultant for Bain & Co. Miller received his BA in Economics, summa cum laude, from Vanderbilt University. He was awarded Phi Beta Kappa, highest honors in economics honors program, and was the recipient of the Chancellor Alexander Heard award and Jo Anne J. Trow undergraduate award for academic excellence. Miller obtained his MBA from Harvard Business School.

Alex Hughes, M.D.: Founder, President
Dr. Alex Hughes is co-founder and president of Function Drinks. A practicing surgeon, Dr. Hughes graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine before completing an internship in general surgery and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Hughes is currently completing a fellowship in spinal disease and surgery of the spine at the Hospital for Special Surgery at the Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Hughes has a passion for technical innovation, not only when it comes to his patients, but also for enhancing the lives of active adults. He has developed a rigorous, systematic, team approach for finding solutions to consumer needs at Function Drinks. He builds on his foundation as a biomedical engineer (B.E., summa cum laude, Vanderbilt University) and his skills as a physician and surgeon to approach innovation in the beverage industry efficiently. The recipient of numerous clinical awards of excellence at UCLA Medical Center, Dr. Hughes’ motivation is his passion for the well being of his patients as well as the lives of consumers around the globe.

Josh Simon: Head of Marketing
Josh Simon is co-founder and head of marketing of Function Drinks. Simon is currently an executive at Color Force, a Dreamworks Studios based production company where he is responsible for overseeing a variety of film and television projects. Prior to joining Color Force, Simon was a director of production of the Walt Disney Company’s Motion Picture Group, where he helped oversee development and production of live action feature films for Walt Disney Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. Simon served as an executive on projects spanning a wide range of genres, including the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardobe; Eight Below; and Herbie: Fully Loaded. Prior to joining the Motion Picture Group, Simon was an executive in Disney’s Strategic Planning Group – a team responsible for devising long term strategies, problem-solving for existing operations, and executing the company’s acquisition and investment activities. Simon’s work focused on Disney’s studio, cable, and broadcasting businesses, including Disney Channel, ESPN networks, and the ABC television network and stations. Simon is a graduate of Harvard University.

Sexual desire and impulse are chiefly controlled through dopaminergic neurotransmitters in the brain. Dopamine (DA) is the neurochemical that activates your reward center (more accurately, "reward circuitry"). The reward center is a small portion of the limbic system that communicates the with prefrontal cortex. It drives nearly all of our behaviors. This center is activated when you engage in activities that further your survival or the continuation of your genes, including sex. While having too little or too much dopamine is unhealthy, normal or healthy levels are important for maintaining a robust libido, harboring food feeling towards other, deriving pleasure from activities, and motivation.*

Nitric Oxide is an important molecule that impacts the cardiovascular system and leads to physical arousal. It directly leads to smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation. It has a supportive effect in healthy individuals on the cardiovascular system, but in terms of sexual health, has a potentiated effect in peripheral sexual organs. Therefore, if the parasympathetic nervous system in the brain decides that conditions are right for arousal, it send s a signal that then acts peripherally via nitric oxide to cause smooth muscle relaxation and dilation. Cnidium, among other ingredients, helps support the actions of nitric oxide.*

The gentle anticholinergenics catuaba and muira puama (both powerful rain forest plant extracts) have been linked to supporting natural sexual arousal by supporting the body's abilities to appropriately regulate acetylcholine levels in a safe, natural, and healthy manner. As mentioned above, parasympathetic tone is increased by lowering relative acetylcholine levels. Catuaba and Muira Puama support the body's ability to appropriately regulate parasympathetic tone which leads to supporting natural sexual arousal in healthy individuals.*

In the body there aretwo different nervous systems: the voluntary nervous system and the autonomic or 'automatic' nervous system. The former system controls conscious actions while the latter is programmed by the subconscious brain center to regulate things like heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, certain aspects of sexual function, etc. The autonomic nervous system is then further divided into two different systems: the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.*

The sympathetic system revs up as part of the flight or fight survival mechanism. Therefore, it works to increase heart rate, decrease GI motility, and increase alertness. The parasympathetic system is associated with activities that require peaceful surroundings: sleeping, GI motility, sexual arousal (erection), etc. Therefore, by increasing parasympathetic tone, you are assisting the ability to get in the mood for sex and maintain an erection. During sex, a cascade of feedback loops culminate in orgasm, which is triggered by the sympathetic nervous system suddenly taking over to end things. Therefore, the parasympathetic nervous system causes arousal and erection while the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for orgasm and ejaculation.*
