Cetyl myristoleate was discovered and isolated by Harry W. Diehl while employed by the National Institute for Arthritis, Metabolism and Digestive Diseases.  He discovered that mice are immune against arthritis and deduced that some factor within mice were responsible for this immunity.  After many years of research he was able to isolate this factor which was subsequently identified as cetyl myristoleate (CMO).  Soon medical tests showed that people with both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis received astounding relief taking CMO.  He soon found that big drug companies were not interested in marketing products containing CMO, possibly because cetyl myristoleate was a natural substance and could not be granted a product patent.*

In common with many other natural substances and drugs, the exact mechanism of cetyl myristoleate's physiological activity is unclear.  As a fatty acid ester, it appears to have the same characteristics as essential fatty acids (EFA), which the human body are unable to produce but are essential nutrients.  In chronic inflammation processes the EFA's are depleted.  Cetyl myristoleate appears to have the ability to correct the imbalance created by chronic inflammation faster and over a longer period of time than EFA's alone.  For best results this product should be augmented with 1500 mg of glucosamine sulfate daily to assist rebuilding cartilage damaged by degenerative arthritis.*

SPECIAL SHIPPING REQUIRED: The phospholipids contained in this product are extremely Heat Sensitive. Their potency and biologic effect are significantly reduced by prolonged exposure to heat above 90 degrees.

Thus, the manufacturer requires this product be shipped in an insulated box with ice packs. They also require that these items be shipped via at least 2nd Day Air.

As a result, you order this product from us, you will be billed an additional $14.90 for the special insulated box and ice packs.

When you check out through our shopping cart, we request that you select 2nd Day Air as your shipping option. If you do not do this (and select Standard Shipping instead), we will still automatically upgrade your shipping method to 2nd Day Air, and charge your account for the difference in cost from Standard to 2nd Day Air.

References and Abstracts on the Benefits of Cetyl Myristoleate and Essential Phospholipids (EPL)

Abstract of: "Cetyl Myristoleate: A Unique Natural Compound, Valuable in Arthritis Conditions," by Dr. Charles Chochran and Dr. Raymond Dent

"Arthritis is a disease of epidemic proportions, but it has been around for so many centuries that it is considered by most people as a part of growing old or a consequence of physical injury.  Arthritis is in fact a far more complex disease than is generally known.  For instance, Dorland's Medical Dictionary describes 27 different types of arthritis, and that does not include such diverse conditions as systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, fibromyalgia, and numerous other conditions which some authorities consider to be types of arthritis.  One authority states that there are approximately 100 causes for arthritis.

Cetyl myristoleate was discovered and isolated by one person, working alone, on a quest to find a cure for arthritis.  Harry W. Diehl, while employed by the National Institute of Arthritis, Metabolism, and Digestive Diseases, specialized in sugar chemistry.  He used his chemical knowledge and research instincts to great advantage, identifying and characterizing over 500 compounds, several of which were patented by the National Institute of Health (NIH).  His most significant discovery before cetyl myristoleate was a method of synthesizing 2-deoxydextroribose, a sugar used in the preparation of oral polio vaccine by Dr. Jonas Salk.

As a researcher, Diehl knew that finding a cure for arthritis first meant inducing the disease experimentally in research animals.  He started with mice, and quickly realized that he was unable to induce arthritis in them.  Diehl said he tried every way he could to give those mice arthritis, but they just would not get it.  Then, he contacted a researcher in California who wrote to him, 'If you or anyone else can give mice arthritis, I want to know about it, because mice are 100% immune to arthritis.'  At that moment, Diehl's research instincts told him that what he wanted was already somewhere in those mice.

After many months of testing, Diehl was able to isolate a factor which protected mice from arthritis.  He concluded that it was apparent that cetyl myristoleate gave virtually complete protection against adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats.  Furthermore, a 1:1 mixture of cetyl myristoleate and a homologue, cetyl oleate, gave results not significantly different from administering cetyl myristoleate alone.

Diehl patented his discovery in 1977, receiving a use patent for rheumatoid arthritis.  He then sought pharmaceutical companies to conduct human trials with cetyl myristoleate, but none were interested in his discovery.  Perhaps the lack of interest was because cetyl myristoleate was a natural substance and could not be granted a product patent, or maybe because drug companies know they will have to run through 25,000 to 35,000 substances before they find one that makes it to market.  Diehl had made a major nutritional discovery, and no one was interested!  Being a scientist, not a marketing expert, Diehl let his discovery lay dormant for about 15 years.

Since the days of Paracelsus, physicians have been combining therapeutic agents for synergistic effects, or to achieve potentiation of several compounds.  As powerful a nutrient as it is, the effects of cetyl myristoleate can be helped by combining it with other natural substances.  Two or three grams of omega-3 oil or essential phospholipids during the month-long course of cetyl myristoleate can help its effects.

This should be accompanied by 300-500 mg of Vitamin E daily.  A minimum of 1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate should also be taken daily for at least three months to assist in rebuilding cartilage damaged by degenerative arthritis."*
Clinical Studies on EPL

In a documentation of 15 clinical trials with a duration of EPL treatment ranging between 1 and 12 months, total serum cholesterol was lowered by 8.8 to 28.2%.  See Fasoli, A., Therap. Select. Risk/Benefit Assess.  Hypolipid. Drugs; G. Ricci et al. (Eds) Raven Press: New York 982, 257 - 262.

In a double blind trial by the authors using 1.8 g oral EPL per day led to mean reductions of total cholesterol by 12.7% already within 14 days of treatment.  After another 4 weeks reduction of initial values totaled 18.9%. See Horsch A.K. et al., VAA 15 (1986) 275 - 279.

After oral EPL treatment up to 16 weeks, mean rates of cholesterol reduction in these studies that were either controlled against diet, double blind, controlled against placebo or were open, ranged from 12 to 25% as compared with initial values.  See Casellas Bernat, G. et al., Clin. Med. 15 (1975) 90 - 95; Skorepa, J. et al., Casopis Lekaru Cekych 113 (1974 784 - 786; Yasugi, T., Jap J. New Rem. Clin 22 (1973) 691 - 693.
