Melissa Supreme for Children - Organic
  • Encourages Trophorestoration of the Nervous System*
  • Promotes Calmness and Support During Occasional Nervousness*
  • Promotes Adaptation to Stress*
Everybody remembers the childhood story of Peter Rabbit. After his harrowing experience in the farmer’s garden, Peter is comforted by his mother making him a warm cup of Chamomile tea. The significance of the genus name Matricaria, which is derived from the latin Matrix, meaning Mother or Womb indicates its use since antiquity for problems of the female reproductive system, as well as the calming and soothing affect only a mother can have. Herbalists have used this plant to support digestion, promote the easing of colic and other complaints resulting from nervous excitability or tension and other situations where a gentle relaxant is called for.*

Passion Flower, a climbing shrub is native to the tropical parts of the United States from Virginia to Florida and Westward to Missouri and Arkansas. The name comes translated from Italian; fiore della passione in reference to the flowers resemblance to the implements of the crucifixion. It does produce a mesmerizing and beautiful yet delicate flower which develops into a large oval fleshy fruit. The Eclectic Physicians used it to promote healthy sleep, especially where restlessness, wakefulness and interrupted sleep were the chief complaints due to debility or exhaustion. The whole plant is used to make medicine, yet the stem and leaves seem to have the highest amount of chemical activity.*

A member of the lamiaceae family, Skullcap has a long history of use in the western Naturopathic Tradition. It was used to support exhausted nerves resulting from mental and physical exhaustion, maintain normal balance in times of muscular tension, and support normal sleep patterns. Many Eclectic Medical texts mention its use to support the nerves during withdrawl from drugs. It is trophorestorative to the nervous system meaning it restores nutrition uptake to the nerves. Like most mints it is cooling yet has bitter principles and other complex chemicals making it a balanced choice as a gentle nervine.*

Wild Oat is a classic restorative tonic which bridges the gap between herbs and food. Oats are of the natural order Graminacea or grass family. Eclectic and Physiomedical practitioners used the extract of the green oat seed “in the milk” for supporting many nervous conditions, supporting healthy sleep patterns, promoting healthy heart function when weakened due to illness, and maintaining healthy nerves while in recovery from various addictions (mainly morphine and opium during the late 1800’s). It was also used to support male sexual function.*

Technical Comments
Chamomile is loaded with volatile oils among them; proazulenes, bisabolol, farnesine, pinene, anthemal, spiroether, and angelic acid. It also contains sesquiterpine lactones, flavonoids (apigenin, quercitin, patuletin, and luteolin), cyanogenic glycosides, bitter glycosides, coumarins, valerianic acids, tannins and the list goes on. Needless to say it is chemically complex. Azulene and Bisabolol are anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic reducing histamine induced reactions. There are also numerous studies indicating various pharmacological activities from all of the other chemicals listed. This seems to be another case of the sum being greater than the total of all the parts. More research is needed to fully understand the exact mechanisms of Chamomiles therapeutic activities.*

Passion Flower  vines and leaves contain many alkaloids such as harmaline, harmine, harman, and harmalol. The plant also contains many bioflavonoids including quercitin, rutin, apigenin, kaempferol, vitexin, and orientin. There have been scarce human clinical trials on this plant, yet it remains a steadfast choice of traditional herbalists for its ability to gently restore debilitated nerve centers by promoting nutrition uptake at the cellular level.*
Skullcap is a nervine and contains numerous flavanoids and flavones including the flavanoid glycoside Scutellarin, essential oils, tannins, and iridoids. Scutellarin acts like quercitin in that it decreases mast cell activity. It should be noted that since Skullcap started to be used as a medicinal plant it has been prepared from the fresh plant. For further information on Skullcap consult this online resource; www.henriettesherbal.com and go to King’s American Dispensatory.*

Wild Oat Milky Seed is rich in Protein and minerals; especially high in potassium and magnesium. These minerals are more predominant when the seed is in the milky stage. Wild Oat Milky Seed also contains B-complex vitamins. Most of the published research on Avena sativa has been conducted on the rolled or prepared oats, beta-glucans and fiber contained in the oat. The relaxing properties of minerals on tissues is well noted and at least worth considering when attempting to explain a plants ability to calm restless nerves.*
