Licorice Extract Wafers, provided by Douglas Laboratories, supplies deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract along with other nutrients important for gastrointestinal health in a chewable wafer.*
FUNCTIONS Licorice root contains a glycoside (glycyrrhizin), flavonoids, asparagine, isoflavonoids, chalcones, and coumarins. It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for hundreds of years to support the body, including the gastrointestinal system. It was often used as a demulcent, to soothe and coat the stomach and throat.* Deglycyrrhizinated licorice is designed to provide the supportive benefits of licorice, while reducing intake of potentially unwanted glycyrrhizin.*
FOS, or fructooligosachharides, function as non-digestible ingredients that can positively affect selected groups of beneficial intestinal microflora, such as lactobacillus. While probiotics merely add beneficial microflora, prebiotics affect the intestinal environment so that beneficial colonies of microflora can flourish. By aiding the beneficial microflora’s survival, pathogenic microflora can have a decreased chance of survival. Glycine, an amino acid, may also play a role in supporting gastrointestinal health.*
