L-Tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid that is synthesized in the body from phenylalanine. As a building block for several important brain chemicals, tyrosine is needed to make epinephrine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which work to regulate mood. Deficiencies in tyrosine, therefore, have been associated with depression. Tyrosine also aids in the function of organs in the body responsible for making and regulating hormones, including the adrenal, thryroid, and pituitary glands. Tyrosine is also involved in the synthesis of enkephalins, substances that have pain-relieving effects in the body.*

L-Tyrosine is a direct precursor to Thyroxine as well as being a precursor to Adrenaline and Noradrenaline.*

Thyroxine is, of course, a primary Thyroid hormone.  Thyroxine deficiency results in a series of conditions including excess weight gain, cold hands and feet, decreased basal metabolism, etc.*

The catecholamines Adrenaline and Noradrenaline are critical in the following conditions:

Blood Pressure:  In Science Magazine it was reported that Tyrosine lowers blood pressure by increasing Norepinephrine metabolites which through feedback shut down sympathetic output.  In this same issue it was found that Tyrosine increased blood pressure 38% to 49% in hypotensive rats through accelerated peripheral synthesis of catecholamine.*

Allergies:  One researcher states that catecholamines also control immune system output.  Therefore, allergy sufferers have responded well to Tyrosine.*

Depression:  Ther American Journal of Psychiatry, postulated that a lack of available tryrosine results in a deficiency of Noradrenaline at a specific brain location, which in turn relates to mood problems such as depression.*
