L-Citrulline or citrulline-aspartate ligase or argininosuccinate synthase, is a metabolite in the urea cycle. It is featured in nobel-prize winning author Dr. Louis Ignarro's book on improving heart health without drugs, entitled NO More Heart Disease. Other amino acids in this cycle are L-Arginine and L-Ornithine.
L-Citrulline is involved in liver detoxification of ammonia, potentially promotes vasodilation, and has been shown to speed recovery from fatigue.* It has also been utilized in the treatment of Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency and other Urea Cycle disorders.*
It is produced in the urea cycle when carbamoyl phosphate is converted to citrulline in the ornithine carbamoyltransferase reaction. When endogenous supplies of ornithine carbamoyltransferase are insufficient, supplemental L-citrulline has been shown to support ammonia incorporation and liver detoxification of ammonia.* Free form amino acid, high purity, well tolerated.
