Specialty Wholefood Formulas Folate, B6 & B12 is crafted from 100% whole foods to help maintain healthy levels of homocysteine in the body. The formula is enriched by the inclusion of beet root, an excellent food source of the methyl donors, folate, and betaine.*
Sufficient body stores of methyl donors are required for the conversion of homocysteine to the amino acid methionine. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with fat accumulation and damage to various tissue and organ systems. In addition, the methylation factors including folate, vitamin B-12, or betaine are helpful in promoting normal production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, as well as in the maintenance of the myelin sheath of the central nervous system.* Folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 have critical roles in: • The prevention of neural tube defects during pregnancy* • The formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin* • Making of new cells and cell replication* • The production of ATP* • Acting as cofactors in several biological reactions in the body*
As research continues to validate the importance of these three vitamins and how interrelated their function is in the body, supplementation of all three is increasingly more important to sustain optimal health and metabolic function. Supplementation is particularly important during pre-conception and pregnancy; in treatment of megaloblastic anemia; and in managing cardiovascular health.*
This product is great in conjunction with Cardio Response and/or Cholesterol Response, as well as Innate’s prenatal formulas.

Innate Response Formulas are multi-vitamin and mineral formulas crafted with 100% whole food, sold exclusively through healthcare professionals. Their mission is to harness the innate healing response within every individual, in the tradition of vis medicatrix naturae, using only the finest nutrient-rich whole foods and botanicals in their nutritional supplements.* The human body depends on supplies of energy for life, vitality and health. Such energy comes from our innate constitution, our surroundings, and primarily from the food we consume. It is a known fact that without quality food, our health and vigor declines, disease rises, and quality of life is lessened. This is an indisputable law of nature.* In accordance with the laws of nature, there are seven principles of natural medicine which are based on the belief that the human body possesses the inherent ability to restore health. The physician’s role is to facilitate this process with the aid of natural, nontoxic therapies, including herbal and nutritional supplementation. With reverence to the body’s innate ability to heal, as well as nature’s capacity to facilitate the healing process, Innate Response Formulas were created.*
Food in its natural state, similar to the human body, is complex in its constitution. Food not only provides essential nutrients and macro-nutrients, but also an intricate web of synergistic constituents that include bio-active peptides, enzymes, amino acids, lipids and a myriad of beneficial compounds. These interrelated constituents, or bioactive co-factors, once considered non-nutritive compounds, are now known to work in unison to help protect the body against a decline in overall health. They also have paramount roles in the assimilation and utilization of essential nutrients in the body. In totality, these constituents are the essence of food. If any one of these constituents or nutrients are removed or altered, the biological activity of all the constituents is greatly diminished. Functioning and existing as a whole, food nutrients have the innate intelligence to nourish and restore the body.* Contrary to popular belief, most of the vitamins, minerals and nutraceuticals used to create dietary supplements are not derived or isolated from food, but are instead produced synthetically from chemicals and manufacturing by-products. This produces vitamins and minerals which are chemically synonymous to pharmaceutical drugs and devoid of the vital essence food intrinsically delivers. Devoid of food intelligence, the biological activity of pure vitamins and minerals is low; therefore, the amount of each nutrient required to instigate an organic response in the body far exceeds the amount of each nutrient present in whole foods.* Although pure vitamins and minerals have curative properties and have helped to eradicate nutritional deficiencies, the benefits are often associated with harmful consequences. Numerous studies have demonstrated that long-term use of synthetically pure nutrients has toxic consequences in the body. Beta-carotene and iron are two well-documented examples. In consideration of the chemical nature and toxicity associated with pure, crystalline vitamins and minerals, it is apparent that the exclusive use of non-food nutritional therapies is not harmonious with the laws of natural medicine.* As research continues to discover how nutrients are delivered and function in the body, it is evident that nutrients delivered in their natural state (in whole foods) are the safest and most bioavailable form in which to nourish the body. Since 1972, BioSan Laboratories has strived to craft authentic nutritional formulas using the highest quality whole food nutrients with unparalleled bioavailability. Innate Response Formulas are crafted with BioSan’s proprietary True Active FoodState whole food concentrates and botanicals, to naturally nourish the body as nature intended.* |

How We Craft Our Formulas Our mission is to harness the innate healing response that is within every individual in the time-honored traditions of vis medicatrix naturae. Honoring tradition, we only use the finest nutrient-rich wholes foods and botanicals that are aligned with these principles. When formulating, we reference the collective wisdom of Ayruvedic, Chinese, naturopathic and herbal medicine, and combine it with sound nutritional science. It is our experience that the synergistic fusion of whole food nutrients and supportive botanicals results in a profound response. All raw materials are tested and assayed for authenticity. All of our formulas are free of isolated or chemically "pure" vitamins and minerals.* Active & Vital Whole Food Nutrients Quality deterioration during food processing is often the result of thermal processing steps. Our gentle process is used to deter the development of heat-processed characteristics and provide a highly active whole food. We focus on minimizing the introduction of microbiological contaminants at each stage of the process, and preventing their growth throughout the entire process. An autoclave is used to sterilize the smaller pieces of equipment and a complete CIP system is used on those items too large to move. In addition, flash chilling and refrigeration, and refractance drying are implemented. All of these steps are important parts of this process. By careful attention at each step we avoid the use of high heat, which degrades the quality of many of our competitors’ whole food products. Every step of our processing ensures that our products are not only whole food, but active and vital. Our mission is to provide the broadest range of active compounds in every single fruit and vegetable concentrate.* Drying Refractance Window drying equipment uses proprietary heat transfer technology to gently, and efficiently remove moisture from delicate fruits and vegetables, while at the same time preventing oxidation of our products. Because the process is self-limiting, it preserves exceptional levels of color, flavor, aroma, nutrients, and texture. Refractance Window drying is superior to the other methods in use today. Fruits and vegetables, containing up to 90% moisture, are placed on the upper surface of the dryer's conveyor belt, floating on the surface of warm water. Due to the Refractance Window patented principle of operation, infrared energy in the water is transmitted directly through the conveyor belt into the fruit or vegetable to be dried, which ensures a gentle drying process. As the fruit or vegetable dries, the conveyor belt’s Refractance Window closes when the fruit or vegetable reaches 3% moisture. This bends the majority of infrared heat back into the water, leaving only conductive heat as the drying means. Refractance Window drying protects the integrity of the fruits and vegetables by preventing color, flavor and nutrient degradation.
Certification The methods utilized in the production of Innate Response products are well-defined and carefully controlled processes. These methods coupled with stringent in-process, finished raw material and finished product testing against detailed product specifications assure the highest quality with minimal batch to batch variation. Only after meeting Innate Response Formulas stringent requirements can the finished product be certified with a Certificate of Analysis.

 | BioSan Laboratories, Inc. has formulated and manufactured quality dietary supplements from whole foods and botanicals for the natural health industry since 1972. BioSan has over thirty years of experience using whole foods and botanicals to create efficacious dietary supplements with superior bioavailability. All of our products are manufactured and bottled in our privately owned FDA-registered facility, independently audited with a standing “superior” rating. The ability to create whole food supplements of consistent high quality has opened up many new international markets. Healthcare practitioners in Japan, England, Canada and France are drawn to BioSan’s dedication to manufacturing the highest quality whole food supplements and meeting rigorous international standards.* As purveyors of whole food supplements, our manufacturing facility is also audited by, and in compliance with, the AIB consolidated standards for food safety. These standards are published strictly for food processors and are based on the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the GMPs, and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. The AIB standards require programs and techniques that protect food from adulteration during storage, transfer and handling of ingredients. Based on AIB’s own inspection and audit of our facility, BioSan is rated “superior.” Our manufacturing facility, raw materials, and final products are regularly and rigorously tested so that superior quality is always guaranteed. All incoming raw material is tested to verify freedom from impurities, including microbes and bacteria. In addition, we test raw materials and finished products to validate potency and authenticity. If no testing standards exist for a particular botanical or wholefood, BioSan Labs has the expertise and state-of-the-art facilities to develop objective and accurate testing methods. No element or aspect during the manufacturing process goes untested.* BioSan's commitment to producing the most bioavailable and efficacious supplements is unwavering throughout every step of the manufacturing process. Since granulation and heat consequences in standard tableting procedures denature and deactivate many of the bio-active peptides, enzymes, amino acids and other volatile food components present in the raw plant material, BioSan has tailored precise heat-free tableting procedures to prevent denaturation. To maintain the integrity of the whole food concentrates and botanicals, our tablets are formed using tableting machines that are maintained and monitored to run at low speeds to keep secondary heat production at a minimum.* BioSan guarantees to limit the use of any fillers, flowing agents or binders when compressing our food tablets. Due to the adhesive nature of our True Active FoodState whole food concentrates, only a scant amount of vegetable stearic acid is requisite as a lubricant on the tableting machines to prevent clumping, which will hinder tablet formation. Once compressed, each tablet is then coated sparingly with a pharmaceutical glaze to protect the whole foods and botanicals from oxidizing and to preserve freshness. Without this coating, the whole foods and botanicals would oxidize and nutritive content would diminish over time. Finished tablets are tested for weight variation, content uniformity and disintegration. Our tablets are readily digested and utilized by the body. For those who have difficulty swallowing, our tablets can be readily broken and/or crushed and stirred into a beverage of choice.* At BioSan, superior quality whole foods and botanicals are not simply a product, but rather a philosophy; whole food nutrients with superior bioavailability are our goal, not simply ingredients in a formula. Every stage of crafting superior whole food supplements is customized to this end: What Mother Nature creates, BioSan delivers.* | |

Distinguishing between the many forms of professional supplements becomes less complex once the four categories of supplements available today are defined. Below is a summarization of the basic differences between these categories.
Whole Food Supplements Many companies tout supplements made from whole foods; however, there are only a few companies that can actually substantiate this claim. Authentic whole food supplements are made with vitamins and minerals delivered in whole food concentrates. The food concentrates selected have been grown in a controlled environment where budding plants are fed a nourishing broth enriched with bioactive peptide carriers. The peptide carriers act as chaperones, which govern a vitamin’s or mineral’s ability to be transformed into the plant’s cellular matrix. Once the plant’s natural capacity to store the nutrient within its cells is successfully achieved, the growing process is complete, and harvesting is commenced using proteolytic enzymes to break down the cells’ walls, and release the intra-cellular material. The whole food extract or concentrate produced is rich in a particular vitamin or mineral and is delivered in a synergistic state, with all of the plant’s inherent food attachments intact and unadulterated. These attachments are vital co-factors which facilitate the body’s natural ability to recognize and utilize the nutrients present within the concentrate. Whole food nutrients are recognized by the body as food, and therefore are better utilized and retained by the body when compared to any other supplemental form.* Food is the complex form in which all nutrients are found in nature. Supplements in this category will list the nutrient names vitamin C, folate, calcium, etc., and the mg dosage of each, but they will not denote a fractionated chemical name. Nutrients as they exist in food cannot be listed as one identifiable organic compound in this way, for the reason that they always exist within an interconnected weave of parts, and never as one isolated element. Nutrients in a whole food state will be listed with their food source in the supplement facts panel such as vitamin C (Citrus sinensis).
Food-Based This category of supplements is created from a physical mix of pure, fractionated nutrients with varying amounts of food powders or extracts. There are several different factors that need to be considered when determining the absolute nutritional value of a food-based formula. The primary factors that affect the quality of a food-based supplement are the amount, variance and form of the foods included in a particular formula. A premium food-based formula is one that provides a broad range of unadulterated whole food or plant concentrates (preferred over powders) in at least a 3:1 ratio of food to vitamins andminerals. Broader ranges of foods and higher ratios of food to nutrients in a formula will significantly improve the bioavailabilty and biological activity of the vitamins and minerals.* Delivering isolated vitamins and minerals in a premium food base is an energy-saving process, as the body will not waste vital energy stores to transform the vitamins and minerals into absorbable nutrients. Ascorbic acid is a good example of a chemically synthesized vitamin that has been vastly studied; it has demonstrated enhanced utilization when the nutrient is delivered with its natural co-factors, such as bioflavonoids, rutin and tyrosinase, which always co-exist with vitamin C in food. The utilization factor can be increased by as much as 3 to 5 times (from 10% for vitamins in the first category, to 30-50% for food based).* To determine if a supplement has a food base, review the label for chemical names (see above), as well as a combination of food extracts or powders. To determine the ratio of nutrients to foods, add up the total milligrams of the listed nutrients and for the food extracts.
Biocultured Supplements Biocultured supplements are a physical mix of food, pure isolated nutrients and potentially one or more strains of yeast and/or probiotics. Once combined, this mixture is allowed to ferment in a controlled environment. The process of fermentation, also known as culturing, biologically alters the biochemistry and nutrient content of the food. Cultured foods have been shown to have numerous health benefits and have played a role in the diet of many cultures for centuries; however, the body cannot sustain optimal health on cultured foods alone. This is due to the loss of substances, nutrients or compounds that are protective of health, such as vitamin C.* Depending on the strains used during the culturing process, the generation or inactivation of toxic substances may also occur. In addition, many proteins and enzymes are denatured during the culturing process, due to the production of one or more acids, resulting in a loss or transformation of biological activity of the nutrients. Supplements that fall into this category will denote the foods on which the yeast and/or probiotics feed. Not all cultured supplements list the isolated vitamins and minerals used in a particular formula.
Pure, Hypoallergenic or Natural Supplements This is the most prevalent category of professional supplements available today. Contrary to popular belief, the vitamins and minerals used to create supplements in this category are not derived from consumable food or botanical sources. Instead, they are synthetically produced, fractionated or isolated from refined raw materials such as crushed rock, petroleum by-products and organic solvents to produce a pure, crystalline vitamin or mineral analogue. Although the final compound is an analogous structure to a specific vitamin or mineral, it is no longer attached to or associated with any of the synergistic co-factors that the nutrient is inherently found with in foods. As a result, pure vitamins and minerals have significantly reduced biological activity and a lower rate of utilization in the body.* It is highly advisable to take supplements that fall into this category with a healthy, balanced meal in order to provide the necessary co-factors required for the body to recognize and utilize nutrients in this form, as well as enhance biological activity. Supplements from this category are readily distinguishable by looking at the supplement facts panel. The vitamins and minerals in the formula will be denoted by a two part chemical name such as vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), or calcium (calcium citrate).

| Research and studies are pointing the finger at the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) for a countless range of conditions. Full of processed, prepared or fast “foods” laden with chemicals, preservatives and GMOs, the S.A.D. consists of fiberless carbohydrates, poor quality and/or unnatural fats, and refined proteins. The S.A.D is calorie excessive, and is also glaringly deficient in the vast array of whole foods abundant with the micronutrients and phytochemistry that, until recent history, comprised the majority of human nutrition for millennia. It is a striking fact: cultures that eat the reverse of the standard American diet – i.e. plant-based, low in saturated fat, and high in complex carbohydrates and fiber – have a lower incidence of cancer and coronary artery disease (CAD). The dietary imbalances and nutritional deficiencies of the S.A.D. are directly linked to many of the challenges facing our patients today. The majority of S.A.D. patients are starving; not for calories, but rather for balanced and complete nutrition. Many researchers have stated that the associated erosion of agro-biodiversity and the resulting simplification of the human diet have contributed to the current state of the S.A.D. patient. Compounding the problem further is the state of conventional produce available. Conventional foods have been shown countless times to have less nutrition than certified organic fruits and vegetables. The shortcomings of food choices, conventional produce and refinement of typical foods consumed are all factors contributing to the S.A.D. dilemma. Up until now, the whole food solution for S.A.D. patients has been difficult to achieve. |
 |
65% of Americans are overweight. One in four has metabolic syndrome. The majority of meal replacement powders available are made from whey or soy, then refined to isolated protein lacking the fiber and omega oils that S.A.D. patients so desperately need. Our ancestors consumed organic foods with eight times more micronutrients, fiber, and essential oils than the Standard American Diet.* IT'S TIME FOR A BETTER SOLUTION...

Certified Organic CLINICAL METACORE Going beyond conventional meal replacements, certified organic Clinical MetaCore is a multi-care meal replacing 13-15 grams of fiber, 1.3 grams of omega oils, 15 grams of hemp seeds, a complete multi-vitamin, enzymes, 3 billion probiotics, glutathione precursors, and green tea. It is part of a great solution to the S.A.D. dilemma.*
Clinical MetaCore supports altered body composition, detoxification, and healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It is available in four clinical flavors that not only taste great, but also provide real health-promoting advantages.*
  Certified Organic RENEWAL METACORE
Going beyond conventional greens formulas, certified organic Renewal MetaCore greens is a clinical-strength, multi-care formula with the nutrition of 25-27 certified organic fruits, vegetables, gender-specific and endocrine-restorative botanicals, 3 billion immune-enhancing probiotics, antioxidants, whole food nutrients and cold-milled organic hemp seed providing soluble and insoluble fiber and omega oils. This is also part of a great solution to the S.A.D. dilemma.* Renewal MetaCore supports detoxifying weight management, enhances immune function, supports balanced endocrine function, and combats the effects of aging with key antioxidants. It is available in four gender and age-specific formulas.* |

1. How is the Innate Response supplement line distinguished from other major professional lines in the industry? Our belief in the healing power of nature drives our company’s mission to focus on whole food supplementation. For decades, the prevailing wisdom had been that there was no difference between vitamins from foods and high potency isolates. However, contemporary research continues to reveal that although the chemical structure of the vitamins may be similar, the vitamins in whole food act differently becausethey exist with their inherent food factors. Since 1972, BioSan Laboratories, maker of Innate Response Formulas, has crafted authentic nutritional formulas using the highest quality whole food nutrients with unparalleled bioavailability. Innate Response Formulas are crafted with BioSan’s proprietary TrueActive FoodState whole food concentrates and botanicals to naturally nourish the body as nature intended.* 2. What are some of Innate Response’s most popular products? Some of Innate Response’s best-selling products are our foundational multi-vitamins, including our Women’s and Men’s formulas. Innate Response foundational multi-vitamin and mineral formulas are crafted exclusively from 100% whole food nutrients. The vitamins and minerals in each formula are not in an isolated state, but rather, exist within a biodynamic TrueActive FoodState whole food concentrate. TrueActive FoodState concentrates not only deliver essential vitamins and minerals but also numerous other vital constituents, including bioactive peptides, enzymes, food compounds and macronutrients that inherently comprise whole food. The food constituents delivered with each whole food vitamin and mineral have irreplaceable roles as co-factors in key metabolic functions, and as bio-carriers that govern nutrient delivery to the cells. It is the bio-carriers that are considered to be the “intelligence” of whole food nutrients and other vital constituents being delivered. Therefore, TrueActive FoodState nutrients have a higher rate of utilization and are also retained longer in the body compared to pure, isolated forms of nutrients.* 3. Does Innate Response manufacture their own products? While most companies do not manufacture their own products and rely on contract manufacturers for their finished products, Innate Response not only manufactures the finished products, but the majority of the whole foods that go into our products as well. Being a vertically integrated company allows us to maintain the highest level of quality at each and every step of the manufacturing process. Creating whole food nutrients is our labor of love. We recently invested in the creation of a new raw material and lab facility with the technology to test all of the materials that go into our products at the time of manufacture. Scientific instrumentation is crucial to providing raw materials with potencies that are validated and documented. No element or aspect during the manufacturing process goes untested. Our facility includes state-of-the-art testing equipment, including High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for testing our vitamins, and Inductively Coupled Plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP) for testing mineral content. We feel we have perfected the best methods for growing and drying raw materials. In fact, we utilize what is regarded as the best drying method for food extracts: the Refractance Window dryer. It is such a new technology that there are only 22 dryers currently in use. 4. What is Refractance Window drying, and what makes it the best option? We utilize Refractance Window drying at Innate Response, a method superior to other drying techniques used today. Although several drying methods for whole foods have been developed over time, none have previously been able to provide the high levels of nutritional content achieved through Refractance Window drying. Spray and freeze drying are the two main methods most companies use to dry their foods and herbs and both of these methods use extreme temperatures. The most popular is spray drying, utilizing temperatures as high as 1,500 F. Freeze drying utilizes extreme cold with temperatures as low as -70F. With both of these methods, the nutritional value of the fruits and vegetables is largely lost. Refractance Window drying equipment uses proprietary heat transfer technology to gently and efficiently remove moisture from delicate fruits and vegetables, while also preventing oxidation of the raw materials. Since the process is self-limiting, it allows the fruits and vegetables to retain their inherently exceptional levels of nutrients, color, flavor, aroma and texture. Fruits and vegetables containing up to 90% moisture are placed on the upper surface of the dryer’s conveyor belt, floating on the surface of warm water. The Refractance Window patented principle of operation transmits infrared energy in the water directly through the conveyer belt into the fruit or vegetable to be dried, ensuring a gentle drying process. As the fruit or vegetable dries, the conveyor belts’ Refractance Window closes when the fruit or vegetable reaches 3% moisture. This bends the majority of the infrared heat back into the water, leaving only conductive heat as the drying means. Refractance Window drying protects the integrity of the fruits and vegetables by preventing degradation of nutrient content, color and flavor. 5. What manufacturing standards does Innate Response meet? All of our products are manufactured and bottled in our FDA-registered facility and are independently audited with a standing “superior” rating. The ability to create whole food supplements of consistent high quality has opened up many international markets. Healthcare practitioners in Japan, England, Canada, The Netherlands and France are drawn to BioSan’s dedication to manufacturing the highest quality whole food supplements and meeting rigorous international standards. As purveyors of whole food supplements, our manufacturing facility is also audited by, and in compliance with, the AIB consolidated standards for food safety. These standards are published strictly for food processors, and are based on the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, the GMPs, and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. The AIB standards require programs and techniques that protect food from adulteration during storage, transfer and handling of ingredients. All incoming raw materials are tested to verify that they are free from impurities, including microbes and bacteria. In addition, we test raw materials and finished products to validate potency and authenticity. If no testing standards exist for a particular botanical or whole food, BioSan Labs has the expertise and state-of-the-art facilities to develop objective and accurate testing methods. No element or aspect during the manufacturing process goes untested. 6. What should healthcare practitioners who have never tried Innate Response know? Our passion is whole foods. Our products are 100% concentrated whole foods. Our vitamin C is concentrated from oranges; our beta carotene is from carrots. Whole food supplements such as Innate Response contain minimally processed whole foods. Our extraction process retains the integrity of the original whole food. Most other companies offering whole food supplements have products that are only partially whole food (also known as food-based). Much of the recent research on long-term health issues show cause to support the consumption of whole foods. Whole food supplements are the perfect fit with any protocol on which a practitioner currently has his/her patients. 7. Why does the supplement facts box appear different? We are often asked for the chemical form of vitamin we are using, such as ascorbic acid or calcium ascorbate. The form that we are using is food, and our labels list the food concentrate we are using for each nutrient. None of the vitamins are isolated; therefore, they do not have simple chemical forms. They are extracts of the foods we are using. Initially, when you look at an Innate Response label you will notice that the vitamin potencies are labeled differently than any other supplement company. All of our nutrients are listed with the amount of food extract and the quantity of the nutrient in the formula. For example: Vitamin C (From 1,050 mg Citrus sinensis) 250 mg. These numbers are important to understanding the benefits of a 100% whole food supplement. In whole food, vitamins evolved as sets of interacting constituents working as a unified whole. The concentrate provides not only the nutrient, but all of the secondary food compounds, enzymes and phytonutrients needed for nutrient delivery. In a recent study on vitamin C published in Nature, it was found that 5.7 mg of vitamin C is equal to 1,500 mg of isolated ascorbic acid as a free-radical scavenger. The study points out that the majority of the activity is due to the phenolic compounds other than ascorbic acid that seem to significantly enhance its antioxidant properties.* 8. Since the potency of whole food supplements is lower than high potency isolates, what makes them effective? We think of potency a bit differently. Instead of delivering 40 different vitamins and minerals in high potency, we believe in the broad range of compounds whole foods provide. The average tomato contains over 10,000 different vitamins, minerals and food compounds. With an Innate Response formula you may not be getting a high potency of 40 different nutrients, but rather a broad potency of all the food compounds that intrinsically work together. Our nutrients are the whole food answer for which many practitioners have been looking. 9. What are the research trends in whole food supplementation? When assessing the studies that have been done on vitamins, it is clear that whole food is the answer. When science was looking at vitamin E in the 80s, it was clear that it was an important nutrient. Then we learned in the 90s that d-alpha tocopherol by itself isn’t nearly as effective; it is much better to utilize a mixed tocopherol vitamin E. Today, we know that the tocotrienols are important as well. For years, people were taking forms of vitamin E that were less effective. As we discover more of the components of food we will continue to discover the other necessary compounds present in the whole foods. Whole food supplements contain not only the known compounds, but also the unknown compounds yet to be discovered, which make whole food supplements truly effective. 10. How does the quality of Innate Response compare to other whole food companies? Since whole food supplements have become a “buzz word,” it seems whole food vitamins are everywhere. Many companies are claiming whole food as the source of their nutrients. Upon closer inspection, most of these products are regular, isolated vitamins with very low amounts of whole foods added. In order to be sure that you are receiving 100% whole food nutrients, the product must say 100% on the label. Many people are familiar with this same problem when buying juice for their families. Many juice products are only about 10% juice, with sugar and sweeteners comprising the majority of the product. This is the same analogy for whole food nutrients: if it doesn’t say 100% whole food, then it probably isn’t. |

Although this formula has many clinical applications, it was crafted specifically to help facilitate the body’s innate ability to maintain healthy homocysteine levels. Several studies have shown that the supplementation of folate, B6, and B12 to be very effective in lowering homocysteine to healthy levels in the bloodstream. Homocysteine is produced as a normal byproduct of the breakdown of the amino acid methionine, which is acquired primarily from eating meat and other proteins.*
Elevated homocysteine levels are typically caused from a dietary imbalance often caused by a diet with excessive animal protein sources and inadequate levels of B vitamins, or by a genetic disorder which results in an accumulation of homocysteine in the body.
Moderate levels of homocysteine are helpful for the growth and maintenance of healthy tissue. With a proper nutritional balance, homocysteine is either converted back into methionine or into other simple amino acids (cysteine and cystathionine), both of which are easily flushed from the body via the urine. However, when homocysteine levels are in excess due to either genetic or dietary factors, it invades the bloodstream and can cause damage to epithelial cells that line blood vessels. This damage can cause build-up of fibrous plaques and excess smooth muscle cells in the vessel walls, creating an undesirable narrowing of the arteries. These fibrous plaques can also attract fat and cholesterol found in the bloodstream, causing fatty deposits and further blockage.*
Studies have demonstrated that supplementation of the vitamins folate, B12 and B6 to be effective in normalizing blood homocysteine levels; this in turn decreases a risk factor for heart disease. At least ten percent of coronary heart disease cases in the US may be caused by hyperhomocysteinaemia.*
Beet Root extract was included because of the beneficial compound betaine it provides. Betaine from dietary sources or from choline metabolism (dependent on folate, B12, and B6) in the body has also been shown to be effective in converting homocysteine to methionine. This conversion can occur without the presence of methylcobalamin (B12) and therefore is helpful in individuals on a strict vegetarian diet, those who excessively consume alcoholic beverages, or those who have parasitic infections. Betaine is known to be particularly effective in managing the genetic disorder homocystinuria that causes homocysteine levels to accumulate in the body.*
Additional Nutritional Applications In addition to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, recent research has indicated that high homocysteine levels in the body may be directly associated with neurotoxic effects and an increased risk of early onset of generalized osteoporosis.*
The brain has a high demand for SAMe and choline; both are produced by methylation reactions involving folate, B6, and B12. These nutrients as methylation factors and donors are involved in the production of neurotransmitters and in the maintenance of the myelin sheath. Therefore, when the body's stores of these nutrients and betaine are depleted, brain health may also be affected.*
A recent study published in the NEMJ found that increased circulating homocysteine levels may be a considerable independent risk factor for osteoporotic fractures in older men and women. The researchers concluded that an elevated homocysteine level appears to be a significant isolated risk factor for osteoporotic fractures in elderly men and women.*
Supplementation of folate, B6, and B12 is suggested to help manage a decline in mental health in addition to helping maintain long-term bone health.*
Why Folate, B6 & B12? As research continues to determine the effects of increased homocysteine levels, the importance of supplementing with Folate, B6 & B12 has been researched. Several peer-reviewed studies have suggested that folate supplementation is effective in lowering homocysteine levels. Since folate’s biological actions are directly linked to the availability of vitamins B6 and B12, it is recommended that a supplement delivering all three of these nutrients be selected for helping to maintain homocysteine levels without disrupting methylation reactions in the body.*
Folate, B6, and B12 work synergistically together as methylation factors in a variety of biological reactions in the human body. Methylation is the biochemical process in which certain molecules transfer or donate a methyl group (-CH3) to other molecules. This donation on the one carbon molecule comes from other larger molecules, called methyl doners. Methylation occurs in every cell of the body and insufficient levels of any one of these three essential vitamins will affect many bodily functions, including SAMe production, cell division, and blood metabolism.*
Whole Food Folate, B6 & B12 Forms The folate, B6, and B12 vitamins delivered in this formula are 100% whole food vitamins. As whole food vitamins they are the biological active form found in the human body and in food. Supplementing with a whole food form of folate (pteroylmonoglutamate derivatives) is increasingly important as research continues to challenge the safety of taking the common synthetic form of folic acid, pteroylmonoglutamatic acid (PGA). This oxidized compound is the pharmaceutical form of folic acid not normally found in foods or the human body in significant concentrations, yet it is the form primarily used in supplementation and food fortification.*
The consumption of synthetic PGA is known to interfere with folate metabolism over a period of years. This is caused by the body’s inability to fully metabolize the oxidized form, PGA, into the active form, methylfolate, which results in an abundance of oxidized PGA circulating in the body. Unmetabolized levels of PGA have been linked to interfering with folate dependent enzymes and inhibiting nucleotide biosynthesis, which in turn counteracts the intended benefit of folate supplementation.*
In a recent clinical review of the safety of long term supplementation and fortification of synthetic PGA, the author strongly suggested that the long term consequences of supplementing and fortifying food of synthetic PGA continued to be assessed due to observed biological consequences in folate metabolism and other enzymatic reactions. Based on his review of published studies and literature concerning folic acid, the author stated, “we should also be assessing supplementation with isomer specific native folates that represent the natural food forms of the vitamins.”*
