Baby's Only Essentials Oral Electrolyte (Apple) is scientifically formulated to contain appropriate levels of electrolytes, water and carbohydrates to maintain proper hydration. This formula is made with organic ingredients, comes in natural grape and apple flavors, and contains no artificial sweeteners or colors. This special formulation is made with organic white grape juice; a well tolerated juice for children recovering from diarrhea.*

Electrolytes are mineral substances (sodium, potassium, and chloride) that conduct electrical currents in the body and maintain tissue fluids. The balance of the electrolytes in our bodies is essential for the normal functioning of body cells and organs. Electrolytes are needed to prevent dehydration that may be caused by diarrhea or vomiting from illnesses such as the flu, rotavirus, Norwalk virus or food poisoning. Giving pure water is not the best way to restore body fluid levels because it dilutes the minerals inside the body’s cells and interferes with their chemical and electrical functions.*

Baby's Only Essentials Oral Electrolyte promotes fluid absorption more effectively than household beverages. Use at the first signs of diarrhea or vomiting to replenish electrolytes and body fluids. Common beverages (water, tea, juice, sport and soft drinks) do not contain balanced levels of essential electrolytes necessary in maintaining hydration. Sugary drinks may make diarrhea worse.*

On A Mission

Baby's Only is produced by Nature's One, and is continuously working to maintain high quality products within a socially-responsible organization. All of their products are rigorously tested by an independent analytical lab to ensure that all vitamins and minerals are present at the levels stated on the label. They also require all ingredient suppliers to certify the purity, composition and integrity of their ingredients for each batch purchased. This guarantees that Nature's One is getting the freshest, highest quality ingredients that meet their exceptionally high standards.

Nature's One is a company you can believe in.

Nature's One promotes breast feeding as the best source of nutrition for developinginfants and toddlers.*
Nature's One only makes products that are based on sound nutritional science as recommended by the
American Academy of Pediatrics
.
Nature's One believes in protecting the family and will donate a portion of its after-tax profits in the form of money and product to help feed hungry families and children throughout the world.
Nature's One believes that every company should have a social responsibility to protect our environment from profit-motivated behavior that degrades our world's ecosystem.
Nature's One stands against businesses where corporate greed motivates companies to find lower cost ingredients without regard to nutrition or long term health effects.
 • Nature's One uses only the best ingredients available.
Nature's One has never used Martek's DHA & ARA fatty acids. They are committed to providing Natural and Organic Pediatric Products that help ensure normal growth and development. All Nature's One products are developed using proven medical and nutritional pediatric science and strict organic compliance.*
Organic Priority

The first priority for Nature's One is to source organic ingredients. Organic is your assurance the ingredients are not genetically modified or processed with harsh chemicals like sulfur dioxide and hexane. Organic farming methods prohibit the use of synthetic herbicides & insecticides. Organic dairy farms do not treat cows with bovine growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics and only feed cows organic grains and grasses. The Cornucopia Institute rated 68 suppliers of organic milk in accordance to their compliance with the USDA organic certification laws and ethics of the organic industry. Milk suppliers can receive as high as a “5 cow rating” or as low as a “1 cow rating”.

The Cornucopia Institute rated the organic milk supplier for Nature's One as “excellent” or a “4 cow rating”. Cornucopia described the “excellent” brands as “highly respected and source their milk from family-scale farms.” In contrast, other organic formulas are using milk from sources described as “giant agribusiness” and are assigned a “1 cow rating,” and store brand organic milk products have received a “2 cow rating.”

Nature's One purchases its organic nonfat milk from farmer-owned cooperatives. You can be assured that the cows raised on these farms graze in high-quality pastures. The result of quality pastures is healthy cows and high quality organic milk.
As family operated organic dairy farmers are nudged out of operation by big business factory farming, parents need to become savvy organic shoppers. The goal of USDA organic certification is to assure consumers that organic products meet the strict requirements as defined in the USDA organic laws. However, the bureaucracy of government and the power of corporate dollars are quickly changing the organic dairy industry. Concerned parents need to look beyond the USDA organic seal and consider the living conditions of the cattle producing organic milk and what this means to their family’s nutrition.

The two primary issues of concern are the factory farm's inability to provide pastures for cows to graze and their practice of selling unproductive calves and replacing them with more mature, conventional cattle.

Baby’s Only Organic formulas are Certified Organic by OneCert. OneCert is a USDA approved
government agency, similar to Quality Assurance International (QAI).
OneCert also complies with the new USDA National Organic Standards Program.

Why Should Infants Not Drink Cows Milk?

The nutrient composition of cow’s milk is specific to a baby calf, not a baby human. Cow’s milk has a higher level of protein to meet the rapid growth needs of calves. This level, called the renal solute load, is too high for a human baby and could overload a baby’s kidneys, resulting in serious health problems. It is harder to digest and could also cause intestinal blood loss.*

Cow’s milk also contains butterfat, which is a very saturated fat and difficult to digest. As is commonly known, animal saturated fat contributes to heart disease. Butterfat also does not provide the appropriate amounts or balance of essential fatty acids. Although the carbohydrate in cow’s milk is lactose--the same type of carbohydrate in human milk--the level is lower than in human breast milk. Cow’s milk is also deficient in iron, which could result in iron deficiency anemia. Furthermore, it is lacking in copper, Vitamin C and Vitamin E.*

Human breast milk is the ideal food for a human baby. For those infants who cannot or do not receive breast milk, the first choice of formula is a dairy-based formula, like Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula, made from cow’s milk that has been modified to better suit the nutrient needs of a baby. Human milk serves as the model for the composition of an infant formula, but formulas at present still do not contain many of the unique compositional features of breast milk. Breast milk contains hormones, immunologic agents, essential fatty acids, and enzymes to help with digestion.*

Modifications that are now made in cow’s milk to make an infant formula closer in nutrient composition to breast milk include:

• Reducing the protein content: Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula is made with organic non-fat dried cow’s milk at appropriate levels for an infant or toddler.*

• Replacing the butterfat in cow’s milk, which is highly saturated, with a mixture of vegetable oils that provide the appropriate balance of saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula is made with organic high oleic sunflower oil, organic coconut oil, and organic soybean oil. This blend also provides the correct balance of the essential fatty acids linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid needed by the body to make DHA and ARA. These fatty acids are important for brain function and visual acuity.*

• Adding appropriate carbohydrates to bring the total carbohydrate content closer to mother’s milk. The carbohydrate composition of Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula consists of 40% organic brown rice syrup and 60% naturally occurring lactose which is part of the organic non-fat dried cow’s milk.*

• Adding some vitamins and minerals in the appropriate amounts needed by an infant to grow and develop.*

• Although human milk and cow’s milk contain cholesterol, formulas at present do not contain cholesterol until additional research is done to document the safety and efficacy of doing so.

Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula contains all of the nutrients in the appropriate amounts needed for an infant and toddler to grow and develop and is preferred over cow’s milk during early childhood.*

Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula fully complies with the nutrient composition requirements of the U. S. Infant Formula Act enacted by the government to ensure that infants receive safe and appropriate infant formulas. Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula also meets the guidelines of the Academy of Pediatrics on nutrient composition of infant formulas.*

If a parent is considering use of whole cow’s milk because of difficulties with formula or for cost reasons, this may signal a greater importance to seek guidance and receive proper nutritional advice appropriate for an infant. Consult the infant’s healthcare professional for advice.

What About Goat's Milk?

In the United States, goat’s milk is gaining popularity because goats eat less and occupy less grazing space than cows. Goat’s milk is also thought to be more easily digested and less allergenic than cow’s milk. Although goat’s milk may theoretically have some advantages over cow’s milk when it comes to allergies, scientific studies have not found a decreased incidence of allergy with goat’s milk. Just like cow’s milk has a nutrient profile needed to support a growing calf, the composition of goat’s milk meets the needs of a growing goat kid, but not that of a human baby.*

Goat’s milk has a slightly higher protein content and more potassium, phosphorus, sodium and chloride than cow’s milk. These amounts (known as the renal solute load) found in both goat’s milk and cow’s milk are higher than that found in human milk and could overload an infant’s developing kidneys, resulting in serious health problems. Goat’s milk acidosis has been reported in the scientific literature and is most likely a result of the high protein level. There are questions too about the possible insufficient levels of the amino acids tryptophan and cysteine in goat’s milk. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins needed to make body cells and organs.*

The fat in goat’s milk is lower in essential fatty acids than cow’s milk. The types of fats in goat’s milk differ from both cow’s milk and human milk. Goat’s milk butterfat, just like butterfat from cow’s milk, is an animal fat that is more difficult to digest than the fat in human milk. As is commonly known, saturated animal fat can contribute to heart disease. Goat’s milk does not contain the types or amounts of saturated fat, monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat of human milk. The right proportion of these fats is necessary to ensure brain, organ, and tissue development. Fat is also used for energy to fuel a baby’s growth, along with carbohydrates.*

The type of carbohydrate in goat’s milk is lactose, similar to human milk and cow’s milk, but like cow’s milk it is lower than the amount of lactose found in human milk. Carbohydrates are needed for energy to fuel growth during early childhood.*

Goat’s milk is deficient in iron, folic acid and Vitamin B6, all nutrients needed during early childhood to prevent anemia.*

Goat’s milk should not be used as a substitute for an infant formula or as a supplement to breast milk. Like cow’s milk, goat’s milk can cause intestinal irritation and anemia.*

Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula is based on modified cow’s milk and has been formulated to ensure the correct balance of all nutrients for an infant. Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula fully complies with the nutrient composition requirements of the U.S. Infant Formula Act enacted by the government to ensure that infants receive safe and appropriate infant formulas. Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula also meets the guidelines of the Academy of Pediatrics on nutrient composition of infant formulas.*

Infant formulas are designed to be as close to mother’s milk as possible to provide the appropriate nutrition for babies during the all important first year of life. Of course, mother’s milk is always the preferred source of nutrients, with infant formulas available for those situations when breast milk is unavailable. The appropriate amounts and balance of nutrients in the first year are critical to good growth and development.*

If a parent is considering use of goat’s milk because baby is having difficulty with formulas, this may signal a need to seek guidance and receive proper nutritional advice appropriate for an infant. Consult the infant’s healthcare professional for advice.

Essential And Non-Essential Fatty Acids

Baby’s Only Organic pediatric formulas contain two essential (precursor) fats: Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) and Linoleic Acid (LA). Alpha-Linolenic and Linoleic fatty acids are called “essential” because the human body cannot make these fats and therefore it is essential to derive them from food sources. Alpha-Linolenic Acid is an omega-3 used by the body to make Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). Linoleic Acid is an omega-6 used by the body to make Arachidonic Acid (ARA). DHA and ARA are called “non-essential” fatty acids because full-term, healthy infants, children, and adults can manufacture these from Alpha-Linolenic and Linoleic fatty acids.*

Baby’s Only Essentials DHA and ARA Fatty Acid Supplement is made with preformed DHA and ARA long-chain fatty acids. This means the fats are already available in their final forms and the body does not need to manufacture them from precursor fats, Alpha-Linolenic and Linoleic fatty acids.*

Breast milk naturally contains DHA and ARA, whereas cow or goat milk does not. The levels of DHA and ARA in breast milk will vary depending upon the mother’s diet. Therefore, pregnant and lactating women may benefit from a DHA supplement if their normal diet is lacking in good sources of omega-3.*

Mothers begin providing DHA and ARA for their fetus during pregnancy and continue after the baby’s birth through breast milk. During the second trimester of pregnancy, the fetus begins to utilize DHA more rapidly for the nervous system, brain, and eye retinal development. As these tissues are forming, the demand for DHA increases, depleting a woman’s own body stores of DHA.*

Breast fed babies are able to receive DHA and ARA from breast milk. However, the availability of the fatty acids for a baby is dependent upon the lactating mother’s diet. Studies show that in cultures where oily fish consumption is high, breast fed babies have higher levels of circulating DHA. The typical Western diet is deficient in omega-3 fats, which is further complicated by the Environmental Protection Agency and Food & Drug Administration’s warning that childbearing women, pregnant women, lactating women, and young children should limit consumption of certain types of fish due to the high mercury levels. Therefore, it may be ideal to supplement with DHA while pregnant and when providing breast milk. Improving a new mother’s levels of DHA may also provide other health benefits not yet completely understood by nutritional science.*

Packaging And Bisphenol-A (BPA)

The concern with bisphenol-A coatings used in some packaging is the potential migration of bisphenol-A into foods. Health concerns related to bisphenol-A have recently been reported because of bisphenol-A’s endocrine-disrupting properties, particularly the estrogen pathway. Bisphenol-A is used in the epoxy resin that coats the inside of some metal cans. This coating helps to prevent corrosion of the can, contamination of the canned food from dissolved metals, and bacterial contamination causing spoilage of the food. Thus, the coating helps to maintain the food product’s quality and taste and aids in extending shelf life.*

Baby’s Only Organic formula canisters and re-closeable plastic lids are uncoated and do not contain bisphenol-A. However, the can’s “easy-open” metal top contains an epoxy-based interior coating that may contain trace amounts of unreacted bisphenol-A. It is highly unlikely that any detectable amount of bisphenol-A would migrate from the easy-open top into Baby’s Only Organic formulas. This is especially true considering that there is minimal contact between the powder and the easy-open top during processing and distribution. Once the formula is opened, the easy-open metal top is discarded.*

The greater risk of BPA migration has been found to be related to heat exposure during processing. BPA migration appears to be most often associated with liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated formulas sold in cans where high processing temperatures are used once the liquid formula is sealed in the can. High temperatures are needed during canning of liquid formulas to achieve product sterility and prevent botulism or the growth of other microorganisms that would lead to spoilage. The presence of high processing temperatures is thought to provoke a migration of the bisphenol-A into liquid formula. The canisters used for Baby’s Only Organic are NOT hot-filled. Baby’s Only Organic powder formula cans are filled at room temperature and then vacuum sealed.*

As always, Nature's One will continue to work with its suppliers to identify the safest packaging and most nutritious ingredients available.

Facts About Electrolytes And Probiotics
Baby’s Only Essentials Oral Electrolyte is scientifically formulated to contain appropriate levels of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and chloride), water and carbohydrates to maintain proper hydration. Baby’s Only Essentials Oral Electrolyte is made with organic white grape juice concentrate, comes in natural grape and apple flavors, and contains no artificial colors. Intestinal toxicity caused by an overgrowth of“bad” bacteria or an inadequate level of “good” bacteria also affects digestion and could also result in constipation and the poor absorption of nutrients.*

As consumers, we are subjected to conflicting messages on just how clean we should keep our bodies and homes. Store shelves are stocked with antibacterial soaps, hand lotions, and other antimicrobial products giving us the perception that all bacteria are bad and should be eliminated. In fact, good health is dependent upon our body’s ability to maintain a proper balance of “good” bacteria or “friendly flora.” The human intestinal tract contains over 100 varieties of “friendly” live bacteria needed for optimal human health. These friendly bacteria are so abundant that they make up between 2 to 3 pounds of human body weight.*

The “ecosystem” of the intestine becomes unbalanced when “bad” and harmful or pathogenic bacteria dominate the system, weakening the body and making it more susceptible to disease. The Bifidobacteria used in Baby’s Only Essentials Probiotic Supplement work by forming acetic and lactic acids in the intestine. These acids lower the pH in the intestines and create a hostile environment for unwanted or “bad” bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, salmonellae, E. coli and staphylococci. In those unfortunate situations when “bad” bacteria do thrive, gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, gassiness and diarrhea may result.*

A probiotic is a live microbial (bacterial) product that beneficially affects the body by improving its intestinal microbial balance and thus improving gut health.*

Ingesting probiotics can maintain good gut health. Scientists believe that many diseases begin in the gastrointestinal tract where compounds are absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. Probiotics are the “good” bacteria in the gut. This prevents “bad” bacteria from gaining strength by numbers in the body. When “bad” bacteria overrun good bacteria, a child may experience excessive gas, bloating, or diarrhea. Healthcare professionals usually recommend an oral electrolyte solution to help prevent dehydration due to diarrhea.*

When used together, Baby's Only Essentials Oral Electrolyte and Essentials Probiotic Supplement can promote hydration and intestinal health in your infant, leaving your baby healthy and you content knowing that your baby is well-balanced.*

Probiotics And Prebiotics: When Should They Be Introduced To An Infant?

The critical period of an infant’s immune development is from birth until 2 to 2 ½ years of age. For infants not receiving breast milk or those born Cesarean section and not receiving breast milk, probiotics will help stimulate an infant’s own good bacterial flora and immune system.*

Baby’s Only Essentials Probiotic is appropriate for a baby 1 to 3 years of age. For infants less than 12 months, consult your healthcare professional before using this or any other probiotic product. For babies born vaginally and who are breastfed, exposure to probiotics and prebiotics takes place at birth and continues through the breastfeeding period. Beneficial bacterial flora is introduced naturally from mother to infant through the birth canal. An infant continues to be exposed to beneficial bacteria through breastfeeding. Breast milk also contains prebiotic ingredients (such as oligosaccharides) that are bifidogenic; that is, they support the survival and growth of Bifidobacteria. Many ingredients found in breast milk still remain a mystery, but the advancements in microbe and nutritional technology have made it possible for studies on the health benefits to infants of Bifidobacteria and fructooligosaccharides to advance. The use of Baby’s Only Essentials Probiotic Supplement should be discussed with the infant’s healthcare professional.*

A healthcare professional may recommend use of Baby’s Only Essentials Probiotic Supplement for an infant or child in the following situations:

• Born by Caesarian Section
• Maternal prenatal use of antibiotics
• Maternal use of antibiotics while breastfeeding
• Following infant or child antibiotic therapy
• Not receiving breast milk (solely formula fed)
• Gastrointestinal disorders such as gassiness, constipation
• Prophylactic use to promote good gastrointestinal health

Who Should NOT use a Probiotic Supplement?

Because probiotics are live bacteria, they should not be used in conditions that predispose to invasive diseases. Probiotics should be avoided in the following situations to prevent adverse effects, such as bacteremia, neonatal sepsis, meningitis or endocarditis:

• Immunologically immature very low-birth-weight infants
• Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
• Immunosuppression after bone marrow transplantation for treatment of aplastic anemia
• Treatment with central catheters
• Feedings through a gastrojejunostomy tube
• Short bowel syndrome

The prebiotic used in Baby’s Only Essentials Probiotic Supplement is fructooligosaccharide (FOS). An individual with fructose intolerance should, therefore, not consume any fructose or use any supplement or product containing ingredients which are broken down by the body into fructose. Persons receiving whole body radiation or radiation to the gastrointestinal tract are also advised to avoid prebiotics.*

Vitamin And Mineral Supplementation

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that healthy children do not require a vitamin / mineral supplement. They do recommend that children older than 6 months receive fluoride supplementation if they live in areas without a fluoridated water supply.

For breast fed infants, the AAP recommends that they consume iron-fortified foods when solid foods are initiated (usually between 4-6 months) in order to ensure adequate iron intake. For children who consume formula, the AAP recommends that they consume only iron-fortified formula throughout the first year of life.

The American Dietetic Association strongly encourages that vitamins and minerals be obtained from whole food sources rather than from supplementation when at all possible.

We live in a time where there are many more options, nutritionally speaking, than there were even 20 years ago. How often are we bombarded with new products in the grocery store? Granted, many of these can be left in the store. However, now we can use a greater variety of foods in order to consume a nutritious diet. We no longer have to rely on only one food to meet a specific requirement.

There are many good, healthy foods out there. Yet when we rely on only one of these foods, we miss out on all of the pleasures and the benefits that some of the other foods can provide. Remember the saying, 'Too much of a good thing will hurt you'? Well, it's the same for healthy foods. If we rely on a limited variety of foods in our diet, our diets may get too much of one kind of nutrient, and not enough of another. We lose sight of the 'balance' of a healthy diet.

By offering your child a variety of foods you will help to not only encourage a healthy diet, but he/she will learn the joy of various tastes and textures. In addition, he/she will also be able to model your willingness to try new and healthy foods.

A healthy diet consists of a variety of nutritious foods. Of course, whenever possible, organic foods will help to minimize consumption of harmful pesticides, chemicals, antibiotics, and/or hormones.

FDA does not approve dietary supplements. FDA does monitor health claims on dietary supplements and will contact a manufacturer if there are issues with health claims on a manufacturer’s product label. In the United States, the FDA has given GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status to FOS and probiotics for the general population, including children.

Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance occurs when the body does not produce the enzyme lactase, or when the maturing small intestine in an infant or child cannot produce a sufficient level of lactase needed to digest the amount of lactose consumed. When the body is not able to handle the amount of lactose consumed, bloating, gassiness, and a very fussy child results.*

The research on use of probiotics for lactose intolerance individuals has shown mixed results. Some people benefit from the use of probiotics while others do not. The reasons for this are unknown and continue to be the focus of ongoing research. For those whom probiotics help, it is thought that the probiotics themselves digest lactose, thus reducing the symptoms of lactose intolerance. The suggestion has been made that healthcare professionals counsel lactose intolerant individuals to try probiotics to see if they help reduce symptoms.*

Baby’s Only Organic is labeled a toddler formula because Nature's One believes that breast milk is the best organic choice the first 12 months of life. After breastfeeding, parents can continue providing organic nutrition using Baby’s Only Organic Lactose Free Formula. For a baby less than 12 months, use as directed by a healthcare professional.*

After 12 months of age, some pediatricians may recommend cow milk or a lactose-free beverage. These beverages fail to provide the complete nutrition and critical fatty acids found in Baby's Only Organic formula. It is important for a toddler to consume foods that offer a well-rounded diet consisting of the appropriate amounts of protein foods, breads and cereal products, fruits and vegetables. It is also important for toddlers to receive the proper nutrition in the correct balance. As toddlers are introduced to new foods and experience fussy eating patterns, parents can ensure that their child is consuming the proper levels of these important nutrients by offering Baby’s Only Organic as a beverage to compliment table foods until 3-years of age.*

NOTE: Baby's Only Organic Lactose Free Formula is a new product and is not yet available. Please continue to check back, as it may be available to you in the near future.
