The medicinal effects of Garlic have been well known for literally thousands of years. The Codex Ebers or Ebers Papyrus dating back to 1,500 BC is one of the earliest recorded medical texts detailing the uses of plants by the Egyptians. They listed Garlic for skin diseases, poisoning, heart problems and tumors. Well preserved cloves of Garlic were found in the tomb of King Tutankhamen. Medieval Europeans used “the stinking rose” to ward off Evil as well as the plague. It was used during World War I in the trenches in a similar fashion to help soldiers resist respiratory infection and infection from wounds. The historical uses could fill many volumes. Garlic remains one of the most widely used medicinal herbs in the world and is one of the most well researched plants on the planet.*
Gaia Herbs grows its Garlic on its own 250 acre Certified Organic Farm in rural Brevard, North Carolina. It is extracted in Gaia Herbs Certified Organic Processing Facility adjacent to the Gaia Farm. Gaia Herbs Captures the Essence of Natures Vitality.*
Goldenseal is a member of the buttercup or Ranunculaceae family. It is native to rich, moist soils of the Ohio River Valley, West Virginia, the mountains of North and South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, and north to New England and Upstate New York and parts of Quebec, Canada. It was harvested almost to extinction in the mid to late 1800’s in the Ohio River Valley where it was sold heavily in Cincinnati in amounts upwards of 200,000 pounds. Eclectic physicians learned about the plant from Native Americans who revered the plant for its medicinal, cultural, and practical uses. The deforestation of the North Eastern United states along with demand and over harvesting led to this plants status as endangered its natural range. The Eclectics used purified forms of the crude herb known in the commercial market as Hydrastine, Neutral Hydrastine, or Muriate of Hydrastin; preparations which were actually hydrochlorates of the alkaloid berberine. These preparations did not yield the same results as the concentrated whole plant extract and were soon abandoned.*
Gaia Herbs uses ecologically cultivated Goldenseal. We offer a WholePlant standardized extract containing 10mg of total alkaloids per ml (30 drops). WholePlant standardization offers a regulated, scientifically validated therapeutic dosage of the plant without altering the original chemical profile of the original crude plant material. No solvents other than alcohol and water are used in the extraction process which is conducted in Gaia Herbs Certified Organic Processing Facility. Gaia Herbs captures the essence of Natures Vitality.*
The St. John's Wort plant is native to Europe but has been naturalized in most of the northern hemisphere. The name refers to the fact that it flowers around the feast of Saint John on June 24th which is also close to the summer solstice. A plant that is common to waste areas, roadsides, and fields it has a rich and colorful tradition of usage dating back to ancient Greece. Gaius Plinius Secundas (Pliny the Elder) wrote about this plant in his 37 volume Natural History which served as the basis of scientific knowledge for centuries. In Greek it is called hypericon (above the icon) referring to its power “over the image” and this idea was furthered through the years. The European peasants thought the plant protected them from evil spirits, witches, demons and lightning. The plant was used topically to support nerves damaged by trauma, and promote recovery from trauma to the skin like burns, wounds and bruises. It was also used internally in homeopathic preparations for nerve trauma. Modern demons like depression have been the focus of many pharmacological studies on this plant.*

There are a number of different Garlic preparations available, and different preparations will yield different chemical properties. Dried Powdered Garlic, if prepared properly contains S-allylcysteine sulphoxide (alliin) and the enzyme alliinase. A majority of the published clinical studies used garlic powder preparations. Aged Garlic extracts or “odorless” Garlic are produced through fermentation and contain sulphur compounds. Steam Distillation of Garlic yields Garlic Oil which is rich in diallyl sulphides. In addition to these preparations, fresh Garlic should also be considered as it is the most chemically complex form of this medicinal herb. Dr. James Dukes Ethno botanical database lists over 170 non ubiquitous chemicals in garlic bulb. Studies have been conducted on Garlic’s possible lipid lowering effects, anti-carcinogenic effects, anti-microbial effects, anti-viral effects, antihypertensive effects, antithrombotic effects, and the list continues. For more information please visit PubMed or use the Search PubMed feature on this website there are over 100 published peer reviewed clinical trials on this website alone.*
The root and rhizomes of Goldenseal are highly concentrated in isoquinoline alkaloids or protoberberines namely Hydrastine (3.2- 4.%), Bereberine (2-4.5%), and Canadine (0.5-1%). The known actions of these constituents are vast affecting the immune system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, nervous system and mucosal membranes in general. There have been numerous studies validating the antimicrobial and antiparasitic activity of these chemicals.*
There have been hundreds of randomized controlled studies on St. John's Wort Extract many using the total Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) and the Zerssen Depression scale (DS) while comparing the herbal extract to anti-depressant drugs. One double blind, randomized, placebo controlled trial conducted in France on 375 patients boasted a 50% reduction in the total Hamilton score. The most effective applications have involved mild to moderate depression as well as seasonal affective disorder cases. The flavonoids hypericin and hyperforin have been the most lauded chemicals contained in St. Johnswort that may be responsible for its pharmacological activity yet with all the research it is still unclear which chemicals if any are “responsible” for its activity. The flowers contain many antioxidants such as Rutin, Quercitin, and Lutein. One of the best reviews published in Phytomedicine in 2002 compiled results from 34 controlled, double blinded studies on over 3000 patients and found positive results when using between 300 and 1000 mg of extract per day. More research is needed to determine the exact mechanism of therapeutic action in this plant.* |
