Cran-C-Plex capsules, provided by Douglas Laboratories, contain a natural concentrate of cranberry juice with additional vitamin C.

Cranberry juice has been recognized over the past few decades for its useful role in supporting urinary tract health. Initially its beneficial properties were attributed to its ability to acidify urine due to its content of organic acids, such as benzoic, malic, quinic, ellagic, shikimic, and citric acids. Metabolism of benzoic acid presumably produces a significant amount of hippuric acid, suggested to be bacteriostatic for Escherichia coli.*

Nevertheless, recent research indicates that other mechanisms may be responsible. These bioactive components of the cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) may support the urinary tract by inhibiting adherence of pathogenic bacteria to urinary epithelial cells and their subsequent proliferation and infection. Bacteria can adhere to epithelial cells via molecules called adhesins, produced by fimbriae, proteinaceous fibers on the bacterial cell surface.*

It appears that two components of cranberry inhibit bacterial adhesion: fructose and proanthocyanidins. Fructose, a sugar typically found in fruit, has been suggested to inhibit adherence of E. coli with type 1 fimbriae, while cranberry proanthocyanidins have been shown to prevent P-fimbriated E. coli from adhering to urinary tract cells. The vitamin C in Cran-C-Plex augments the natural antioxidant power of these proanthocyanidins.*
