Your Liver: The Coenzymator
Your liver is the most vital nutrient-processing organ in the body, your major organ of metabolism. While it only weighs about 3% of total body weight, the liver uses about 12% of the body’s total energy, and it must generate this energy in its own cells. The liver routinely performs over 500 known functions to regulate your cells’ metabolism. It is the “alchemical wizard” of the body, transforming toxins into harmless chemicals for excretion, and regulating carbohydrate, fat, and protein processing. It also is a key regulator of blood sugar, producing glucose, glycogen, and Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF).*

The Enzyme/Coenzyme Connection
The millions of continuously-occurring biochemical conversions necessary to sustain life can only happen in the presence of enzymes. Typically, enzymes are made up of two components: the apoenzyme and the coenzyme. The apo-enzyme is a protein that identifies which molecule needs to be converted. The coenzyme (the active form of a vitamin) is like a switch that activates, or turns on, the enzyme. So typically, without coenzymes, enzymes don’t work. And without enzymes, all human biochemistry screeches to a halt.*

It is a known fact that as people age, their ability to produce enzymes decreases dramatically. Coenzymes are generally made from B-Vitamins (such as B-1 – Thiamin, B-2 – Riboflavin, B-3 – Niacin, B-5 – Pantothenic Acid, B-6 – Pyridoxine, and B-12 – Cobalamin). In some instances, instead of a coenzyme, a mineral acts as the switch to activate the enzymes (such minerals include calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, copper, iron, selenium, and molybdenum). An enzyme activated by a mineral is called a metallo-enzyme. In some cases, both a coenzyme and a mineral are needed (e.g. alcohol dehyrogenase – the enzyme needed to break down alcohol – needs the coenzyme form of Vitamin B-3 (NAD), plus zinc to do its job).*

Enzymes may be categorized into two broad classes – digestive enzymes and metabolic enzymes. Digestive enzymes serve to break down or digest the foods we eat (e.g. pepsin in the stomach begins protein digestion, which is completed by other enzymes in the small intestine, such as trypsin and chymotrypsin). Metabolic enzymes are the enzymes inside our cells and in the blood, which carry out the thousands of cellular biochemical processes collectively known as “metabolism”. Two examples of enzymes found in the late stages of the Krebs’ energy production cycle are succinic dehydrogenase, which turns succinic acid into fumaric acid utilizing FAD, or Coenzymated B-2; and malate dehydrogenase, which turns malic acid into oxaloacetate utilizing NAD, or Coenzymated B-3.*

A Long Day’s Journey
While it is possible to take supplements of various digestive enzymes to aid our digestion (e.g. pancreatin, bromelain, and papain), few – if any – metabolic enzymes will survive their journey through the digestive tract intact. So unfortunately, there is usually little or no benefit from taking metabolic enzyme supplements.*

Up until now, one practical way to increase our vital metabolic enzymes was by vitamin and mineral supplementation. Some of these will survive the digestive tract, enter the bloodstream, be Coenzymated by the liver, then plug into an apoenzyme, creating an active, metabolic enzyme.*

Arriving Intact
Because this process is long and sometimes inefficient, it may beadvantageous to the body to provide it with preformed coenzymes – if this is done in a way that will not lead to their destruction in the process of digestive absorption. What this means is that if you swallow vitamin coenzymes (and many of the vitamins in fresh food are actually in their coenzyme form), stomach acid and pancreatic digestive juices will usually reduce the coenzymes back to simple free-form vitamins! Being aware of this problem, some manufacturers offering coenzyme B supplements have enteric-coated their tablets to shield the coenzyme from destruction by stomach acids or intestinal bicarbonates. However, this approach does not take into account a key fact of digestive physiology.*

Located within the cells that make up the small intestine lining – and through which all absorbed nutrients must pass on their way to the liver – are enzymes which serve to break down coenzymes back into their free vitamin form. Thus, enteric coating still will not prevent the degradation of coenzymes as they pass from the intestine to the rest of the body.*

The Sublingual Solution
Fortunately, there is a solution to the problem of getting coenzymes intact into our bloodstream: the sublingual tablet. Sublingual tablets are made to dissolve slowly – over 5 to 10 minutes in the mouth – so there is ample opportunity for absorption. The oral tissues are richly supplied with tiny blood vessels, called capillaries, just a few cell layers beneath the skin of the cheeks and under the tongue. And, unlike the stomach and small intestine, saliva contains no powerful digestive acids or enzymes to break down the coenzymes before they can be absorbed. As a sublingual coenzyme B tablet dissolves near the capillary membranes, some of the coenzyme molecules will pass through the skin directly into the bloodstream by a process called “passive diffusion”. Once these coenzyme molecules enter the capillaries in the mouth tissue and the cheeks’ buccal membranes, they are carried by the bloodstream throughout the body. One study using both sublingual and oral supplements –in this case, of testosterone – found that the absorption of the sublingual was twice that of the oral dose.*
