 The Bach Original Flower Remedies were developed by Dr. Edward Bach, a Harley Street doctor and well known physician, bacteriologist, homeopath and researcher. Dr. Bach studied medicine at the University College Hospital in London, where he was a House Surgeon. He also worked in general practice from his office on Harley Street. As a bacteriologist, and later a pathologist, he worked on vaccines and a set of homoeopathic nosodes still known as the seven Bach nosodes.
Despite the success of his work with orthodox medicine, he felt dissatisfied with the way doctors were expected to concentrate on diseases and ignore the people who were suffering from them. He was inspired by his work with homoeopathy, but wanted to find remedies that would be purer and less reliant on the products of disease. In 1930 he gave up his lucrative practice and left London, determined to devote the rest of his life to a new system of medicine that he was sure could be found in nature.
Just as he had abandoned his old home, office and work, so now he abandoned the scientific methods he had used up until now. Instead he chose to rely on his natural gifts as a healer, and use his intuition to guide him. One by one he found the remedies he wanted, each aimed at a particular mental state or emotion. His life followed a seasonal pattern: the spring and summer spent looking for and preparing the remedies, the winter spent giving help and advice to all who came looking for them. He found that when he treated the personalities and feelings of his patients, their unhappiness and physical distress would be alleviated as the natural healing potential in their bodies was unblocked and allowed to work once more.Dr. Bach believed that attitude plays a vital role in maintaining health and recovering from illness, and wanted to find something that treated the cause rather than the symptom. After identifying 38 basic negative states of mind and spending several years exploring the countryside, he eventually managed to create a plant or flower based remedy for each one. In 1934 he decided to settle down and start a center for his work, and chose Mount Vernon, a small cottage in Sotwell, Oxfordshire. He spent the last years of his life at Mount Vernon, now known as the Bach Centre, and it was here that he completed his research. Dr. Bach passed away peacefully on the evening of November 27th, 1936. He was only 50 years old, but he left behind several lifetimes of experience and effort, and a system of medicine that is now used all over the world. |

The continuation of Dr. Bach's work in this way has been enabled by the friends and colleagues he trained and to whom he entrusted full responsibility to adhere to his exact methods of preparation. Judy Ramsell Howard is the Principal of the Bach Centre. Her role is to ensure that the preparation of the remedies never strays from Dr. Bach's original methods. As she says, "Many of the plants we use come from sites originally identified by Dr. Bach himself and we still make the remedies just as they were made in Dr. Bach's day. The method has been passed down lovingly through the generations. He taught his assistants who taught my aunt and father, who have in turn taught me, and we continue to make the remedies using all the love, care and attention to detail that has always gone into their preparation here at Mount Vernon."
 Wanting to make his remedies more available to the general public, Dr. Bach enlisted the help of Nelsons Homeopathic Pharmacy in London back in the 1930s. Under his instruction, they began to make and sell stock remedies from the mother tinctures he supplied. In 1990 this relationship was formalized and since then Nelsons (the Pharmacy's parent company) has been responsible for all the bottling and distribution of the remedies. The arrangement between The Bach Centre and Nelsons means that the stock remedies can be bottled on a larger scale and meet the necessary regulatory requirements without compromising Dr. Bach's instructions in any way.

 Preparing the Bach Original Flower Remedies is a three step process:Step One: Mother tinctures are prepared from plant material and natural spring water using either the Sun or Boiling Method as defined by Dr. Bach.
Step Two: The mother tincture is made up of the energized spring water [Step one] mixed with an equal quantity of 40% brandy. The brandy acts purely as a preservative for the remedy.
Step Three: To make the stock bottle, the mother tincture is then added to 27% grape alcohol. There are two methods of preparing the mother tinctures for the Bach Original Flower Remedies.  The Sun Method: Dr. Bach used this method to make 20 of the remedies, most of which are delicate flowers that bloom in the height of summer.  The Boiling Method: Dr. Bach used this method to prepare the remaining 18 remedies, from heartier trees, bushes and plants, most of which flower in the early part of the year. |

Today, it is run by friends and colleagues that he trained and to whom he entrusted full responsibility to adhere to his exact methods of preparation. In addition, Mount Vernon has become the world center for education and information on Dr. Bach's work, including publications and referral to practitioners. The Centre is open to visitors, and in everything done there, the aim is to maintain the simplicity and purity of Dr. Bach's work in the way he intended.

 Flowers, as with all living things, are imprinted with a specific vibratory energy.
Our bodies, too, are a complex system of electrical vibrations. When this electrical system is flowing smoothly, our physical bodies experience health. If there are blocks in the flow, imbalances will occur and create outward symptoms.
Flower essences address the energetic blocks by introducing a balancing vibratory effect, thus returning the emotional, mental, and energetic states to their normal flow.
