Cascara Sagrada Max-V, provided by Douglas Laboratories, supplies 50 mg of standardized Cascara sagrada extract in each vegetarian capsule.
Cascara Sagrada is a small deciduous tree native to the west coast of North America. It was introduced to early explorers by Native Americans. It contains free anthraquinone and hydroxyanthracine derivatives (HAD). This U.S.P. extract is standardized at 25-30% HAD, of which 80% is cascaroside.*
The bark is used for gastrointestinal support and thought to have a laxative effect. Chemicals known as cascarosides that are found in the bark are thought to be one of the active principles of the plant.*
