Food in its natural state, similar to the human body, is complex in its constitution. Contrary to popular belief, most of the vitamins, minerals and nutraceuticals used to create dietary supplements are not derived or isolated from food, but are instead produced synthetically from chemicals and manufacturing by-products. This produces vitamins and minerals which are chemically synonymous to pharmaceutical drugs and devoid of the vital essence food intrinsically delivers. All of our formulas are free of isolated or chemically "pure" vitamins and minerals.*

Active & Vital Whole Food Nutrients
Quality deterioration during food processing is often the result of thermal processing steps. Our gentle process is used to deter the development of heat-processed characteristics and provide a highly active whole food. We focus on minimizing the introduction of microbiological contaminants at each stage of the process, and preventing their growth throughout the entire process. An autoclave is used to sterilize the smaller pieces of equipment and a complete CIP system is used on those items too large to move. In addition, flash chilling and refrigeration, and refractance drying are implemented. All of these steps are important parts of this process. By careful attention at each step we avoid the use of high heat, which degrades the quality of many of our competitors’ whole food products. Every step of our processing ensures that our products are not only whole food, but active and vital. Our mission is to provide the broadest range of active compounds in every single fruit and vegetable concentrate.*

Drying
Refractance Window drying equipment uses proprietary heat transfer technology to gently, and efficiently remove moisture from delicate fruits and vegetables, while at the same time preventing oxidation of our products. Because the process is self-limiting, it preserves exceptional levels of color, flavor, aroma, nutrients, and texture. Refractance Window drying is superior to the other methods in use today. Fruits and vegetables, containing up to 90% moisture, are placed on the upper surface of the dryer's conveyor belt, floating on the surface of warm water. Due to the Refractance Window patented principle of operation, infrared energy in the water is transmitted directly through the conveyorbelt into the fruit or vegetable to be dried, which ensures a gentle drying process. As the fruit or vegetable dries, the conveyor belt’s Refractance Window closes when the fruit or vegetable reaches 3% moisture. This bends the majority of infrared heat back into the water, leaving only conductive heat as the drying means. Refractance Window drying protects the integrity of the fruits and vegetables by preventing color, flavor and nutrient degradation.

Certification
The methods utilized in the production of Innate Response products are well-defined and carefully controlled processes. These methods coupled with stringent in-process, finished raw material and finished product testing against detailed product specifications assure the highest quality with minimal batch to batch variation. Only after meeting Innate Response Formulas stringent requirements can the finished product be certified with a Certificate of Analysis.

BioSan guarantees to limit the use of any fillers, flowing agents or binders when compressing our food tablets. Due to the adhesive nature of our True Active FoodState whole food concentrates, only a scant amount of vegetable stearic acid is requisite as a lubricant on the tableting machines to prevent clumping, which will hinder tablet formation. Once compressed, each tablet is then coated sparingly with a pharmaceutical glaze to protect the whole foods and botanicals from oxidizing and to preserve freshness. Without this coating, the whole foods and botanicals would oxidize and nutritive content would diminish over time. Finished tablets are tested for weight variation, content uniformity and disintegration. Our tablets are readily digested and utilized by the body. The Difference Between Whole Food And Other Supplements

Distinguishing between the many forms of professional supplements becomes less complex once the four categories of supplements available today are defined. Below is a summarization of the basic differences between these categories.


Whole Food Supplements
Many companies tout supplements made from whole foods; however, there are only a few companies that can actually substantiate this claim. Authentic whole food supplements are made with vitamins and minerals delivered in whole food concentrates. The food concentrates selected have been grown in a controlled environment where budding plants are fed a nourishing broth enriched with bioactive peptide carriers. The peptide carriers act as chaperones, which govern a vitamin’s or mineral’s ability to be transformed into the plant’s cellular matrix. Once the plant’s natural capacity to store the nutrient within its cells is successfully achieved, the growing process is complete, and harvesting is commenced using proteolytic enzymes to break down the cells’ walls, and release the intra-cellular material.

The whole food extract or concentrate produced is rich in a particular vitamin or mineral and is delivered in a synergistic state, with all of the plant’s inherent food attachments intact and unadulterated. These attachments are vital co-factors which facilitate the body’s natural ability to recognize and utilize the nutrients present within the concentrate. Whole food nutrients are recognized by the body as food, and therefore are better utilized and retained by the body when compared to any other supplemental form.*

Food is the complex form in which all nutrients are found in nature. Supplements in this category will list the nutrient names vitamin C, folate, calcium, etc., and the mg dosage of each, but they will not denote a fractionated chemical name. Nutrients as they exist in food cannot be listed as one identifiable organic compound in this way, for the reason that they always exist within an interconnected weave of parts, and never as one isolated element. Nutrients in a whole food state will be listed with their food source in the supplement facts panel such as vitamin C (Citrus sinensis).


Food-Based
This category of supplements is created from a physical mix of pure, fractionated nutrients with varying amounts of food powders or extracts. There are several different factors that need to be considered when determining the absolute nutritional value of a food-based formula. The primary factors that affect the quality of a food-based supplement are the amount, variance and form of the foods included in a particular formula. A premium food-based formula is one that provides a broad range of unadulterated whole food or plant concentrates (preferred over powders) in at least a 3:1 ratio of food to vitamins and minerals. Broader ranges of foods and higher ratios of food to nutrients in a formula will significantly improve the bioavailabilty and biological activity of the vitamins and minerals.*

Delivering isolated vitamins and minerals in a premium food base is an energy-saving process, as the body will not waste vital energy stores to transform the vitamins and minerals into absorbable nutrients. Ascorbic acid is a good example of a chemically synthesized vitamin that has been vastly studied; it has demonstrated enhanced utilization when the nutrient is delivered with its natural co-factors, such as bioflavonoids, rutin and tyrosinase, which always co-exist with vitamin C in food. The utilization factor can be increased by as much as 3 to 5 times (from 10% for vitamins in the first category, to 30-50% for food based).*

To determine if a supplement has a food base, review the label for chemical names (see above), as well as a combination of food extracts or powders. To determine the ratio of nutrients to foods, add up the total milligrams of the listed nutrients and for the food extracts.


Biocultured Supplements
Biocultured supplements are a physical mix of food, pure isolated nutrients and potentially one or more strains of yeast and/or probiotics. Once combined, this mixture is allowed to ferment in a controlled environment. The process of fermentation, also known as culturing, biologically alters the biochemistry and nutrient content of the food. Cultured foods have been shown to have numerous health benefits and have played a role in the diet of many cultures for centuries; however, the body cannot sustain optimal health on cultured foods alone. This is due to the loss of substances, nutrients or compounds that are protective of health, such as vitamin C.*

Depending on the strains used during the culturing process, the generation or inactivation of toxic substances may also occur. In addition, many proteins and enzymes are denatured during the culturing process, due to the production of one or more acids, resulting in a loss or transformation of biological activity of the nutrients. Supplements that fall into this category will denote the foods on which the yeast and/or probiotics feed. Not all cultured supplements list the isolated vitamins and minerals used in a particular formula.


Pure, Hypoallergenic or Natural Supplements
This is the most prevalent category of professional supplements available today. Contrary to popular belief, the vitamins and minerals used to create supplements in this category are not derived from consumable food or botanical sources. Instead, they are synthetically produced, fractionated or isolated from refined raw materials such as crushed rock, petroleum by-products and organic solvents to produce a pure, crystalline vitamin or mineral analogue. Although the final compound is an analogous structure to a specific vitamin or mineral, it is no longer attached to or associated with any of the synergistic co-factors that the nutrient is inherently found with in foods. As a result, pure vitamins and minerals have significantly reduced biological activity and a lower rate of utilization in the body.*

It is highly advisable to take supplements that fall into this category with a healthy, balanced meal in order to provide the necessary co-factors required for the body to recognize and utilize nutrients in this form, as well as enhance biological activity. Supplements from this category are readily distinguishable by looking at the supplement facts panel. The vitamins and minerals in the formula will be denoted by a two part chemical name such as vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), or calcium (calcium citrate).


The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) Dilemma
Research and studies are pointing the finger at the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) for a countless range of conditions. Full of processed, prepared or fast “foods” laden with chemicals, preservatives and GMOs, the S.A.D. consists of fiberless carbohydrates, poor quality and/or unnatural fats, and refined proteins. Dr. Mary Bove
Dr. Bove obtained her doctorate of naturopathic medicine and midwifery certification from Bastyr College of Natural Medicine (1990). Dr. Bove also served as a full-time faculty member at Bastyr College, where she chaired the departments of botanical medicine and naturopathic midwifery. Dr. Hiroaki Nanba received his PhD in biochemistry and immunology in 1976 from Kyoto University in Japan. Currently, Dr. Nanba is the senior professor of microbiochemistry at Kobe Pharmaceutical University in Kobe, Japan. Dr. Nanba is a member of the Japanese Cancer Society, Japanese Society of Immunology, Pharmacology Society of Japan and the New York Academy of Sciences. Larken Bunce is an educator and clinical herbalist practicing in Montpelier, VT. While most companies do not manufacture their own products and rely on contract manufacturers for their finished products, Innate Response not only manufactures the finished products, but the majority of the whole foods that go into our products as well. Being a vertically integrated company allows us to maintain the highest level of quality at each and every step of the manufacturing process. Creating whole food nutrients is our labor of love. We recently invested in the creation of a new raw material and lab facility with the technology to test all of the materials that go into our products at the time of manufacture. Scientific instrumentation is crucial to providing raw materials with potencies that are validated and documented. No element or aspect during the manufacturing process goes untested. 5. What manufacturing standards does Innate Response meet?

7. Why does the supplement facts box appear different?
We are often asked for the chemical form of vitamin we are using, such as ascorbic acid or calcium ascorbate. The form that we are using is food, and our labels list the food concentrate we are using for each nutrient. None of the vitamins are isolated; therefore, they do not have simple chemical forms. They are extracts of the foods we are using. Initially, when you look at an Innate Response label you will notice that the vitamin potencies are labeled differently than any other supplement company. All of our nutrients are listed with the amount of food extract and the quantity of the nutrient in the formula. For example: Vitamin C (From 1,050 mg Citrus sinensis) 250 mg. These numbers are important to understanding the benefits of a 100% whole food supplement. In whole food, vitamins evolved as sets of interacting constituents working as a unified whole. The concentrate provides not only the nutrient, but all of the secondary food compounds, enzymes and phytonutrients needed for nutrient delivery. In a recent study on vitamin C published in Nature, it was found that 5.7 mg of vitamin C is equal to 1,500 mg of isolated ascorbic acid as a free-radical scavenger. The study points out that the majority of the activity is due to the phenolic compounds other than ascorbic acid that seem to significantly enhance its antioxidant properties.*

8. Since the potency of whole food supplements is lower than high potency isolates, what makes them effective?
We think of potency a bit differently. Instead of delivering 40 different vitamins and minerals in high potency, we believe in the broad range of compounds whole foods provide. The average tomato contains over 10,000 different vitamins, minerals and food compounds. With an Innate Response formula you may not be getting a high potency of 40 different nutrients, but rather a broad potency of all the food compounds that intrinsically work together. Our nutrients are the whole food answer for which many practitioners have been looking.

9. What are the research trends in whole food supplementation?
When assessing the studies that have been done on vitamins, it is clear that whole food is the answer. When science was looking at vitamin E in the 80s, it was clear that it was an important nutrient. Then we learned in the 90s that d-alpha tocopherol by itself isn’t nearly as effective; it is much better to utilize a mixed tocopherol vitamin E. Today, we know that the tocotrienols are important as well. For years, people were taking forms of vitamin E that were less effective. As we discover more of the components of food we will continue to discover the other necessary compounds present in the whole foods. Whole food supplements contain not only the known compounds, but also the unknown compounds yet to be discovered, which make whole food supplements truly effective.

10. How does the quality of Innate Response compare to other whole food companies?
Since whole food supplements have become a “buzz word,” it seems whole food vitamins are everywhere. Many companies are claiming whole food as the source of their nutrients. Upon closer inspection, most of these products are regular, isolated vitamins with very low amounts of whole foods added. In order to be sure that you are receiving 100% whole food nutrients, the product must say 100% on the label. Many people are familiar with this same problem when buying juice for their families. Many juice products are only about 10% juice, with sugar and sweeteners comprising the majority of the product. Key Ingredients
B-6 Pyridoxine
Pyridoxine is important to the formation of the body’s proteins and structural compounds, chemical transmitters in the nervous system, prostaglandins, and red blood cells. Vitamin B-6 supplementation has demonstrated a significant blood pressure lowering effect in a human clinical study.*

Folate
Folate functions in many metabolic pathways together with Vitamin B-12. Cardiovascular research shows the importance of folate for proper homocysteine management to prevent atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). It acts as a carbon donor in the breakdown of homocysteine into the amino acids cysteine and taurine. Folate also functions as a methyl donor to create methyl-cobalamin, used in proper metabolism and breakdown of homocysteine.*

B-12 Cobalamin

B-12 works with folate in the production of red blood cells. A human clinical study in Dublin, Ireland found that homocysteine levels lowered significantly while participants took folate. However, they found that keeping adequate B-12 levels was necessary to maintain the reduced homocysteine levels.*

One of the primary metabolic roles of Vitamin B-12 is to act as a co-enzyme in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. This essential B-complex vitamin is important to prevent pernicious anemia. A vegetarian diet and aging may increase our need for supplementation.

Potassium
Potassium is an essential element for maintaining normal blood pressure. Potassium exchanges place with sodium during the contraction of muscles and the transmission of nerve impulses.*

Keeping sodium levels low and potassium levels adequate is an important aspect of hypertension treatment, as they must exist in balance with each other. Potassium helps people with hypertension reduce the chance of renal damage and strokes. Diuretic drugs can deplete potassium and can therefore be dangerous.*

Magnesium
A magnesium deficiency has been shown to produce spasms of the coronary arteries and is thought to be a cause of some types of heart attacks. Magnesium, along with the minerals potassium, sodium, and calcium, affects the tone of blood vessels.*

Blood levels of magnesium are low in patients with myocardial ischemia, coronary artery spasm, mitral valve prolapse, and cardiac tachyarrythmias. Magnesium insufficiency directly and indirectly affects cardiac function through its effect on potassium, sodium, and calcium concentrations in cells and surrounding fluid. Many of those with high blood pressure and angina have low serum levels of magnesium. There is considerable evidence that high intake of magnesium is associated with lower blood pressure in population studies.*
 
Some diuretic drugs cause the excretion of magnesium, a potentially dangerous situation in CVD if supplemental sources of magnesium are not provided.*

FoodState Vitamin E
The primary function of vitamin E is its action as a cellular antioxidant, protecting lipids from peroxidation. About 90% of the vitamin E stored in the body is located in the adipose tissue. Vitamin E is the “chain breaking antioxidant” because it will donate one of its electrons to a free radical to stop a free radical chain reaction. Populations with diets low in vitamin E and where serum levels are low in vitamin E have higher incidences of CVD.*

Vitamin E has been shown in several studies to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease mortality by anywhere from 37%-47%, with even greater benefits found when tested on non-smokers.*

Vitamin E has demonstrated the ability to decrease oxidative susceptibility of LDL cholesterol, protecting LDL (low density lipoproteins) cholesterol from lipid peroxidation. Oxidation of low density lipoproteins creates one of the most dangerous free radicals, a leading factor in atherosclerosis. Vitamin E helps decrease the progression of coronary heart disease and also helps restore decreased levels of prostacyclin production to the vascular walls.*

FoodState Selenium

Selenium is a trace mineral that functions as an antioxidant. Its primary function is as a component of the vital antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, working with vitamin E to prevent free radical damage to cells and supporting proper oxygenation in the blood. In a research study in Poland, selenium levels were significantly lower in the red blood cells and plasma of patients with angina.*

Selenium has been shown to reduce platelet aggregation.*

Coenzyme Q-10
CoQ10 is an essential component of the generators of the cell, the mitochondria. The heart muscle is dense with mitochondria cells and CoQ10 is necessary for energy reactions to take place. It is a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial oxidation.*

Cardiovascular diseases, including angina, hypertension, mitral valve prolapse, and congestive heart failure all require increased tissue levels of CoQ10. CoQ10 is thought to work via a positive ionotropic effect. There have been several studies linking deficiency of CoQ10 and hypertension. In several studies CoQ10 has been shown to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension. CoQ10 levels tend to diminish with age, suggesting the need to supplement for optimal cardiovascular health.*

Reishi Mushroom Mycelia Extract, (Ganoderma lucidium) (Ling-Zhi)

Reishi is considered a superior tonic for the cardiovascular system. A human study on hypotensive patients revealed the ability of Reishi to inhibit platelet aggregation and lower blood pressure.*

Reishi mushroom has demonstrated antioxidant, antitumor, antihepatotoxic (liver protecting), and cholesterol regulating properties in numerous studies.*

The liver is important as it helps with fat utilization, detoxifying potential free radicals and foreign microbes, utilization of nutrients (particularly those that are fat soluble), and in cholesterol breakdown and utilization.*
 
The mycelia of Reishi contains active anti-tumor polysaccharides and about 100 different triterpenes. The triterpenes, such as ganoderic acids, have been shown to assist in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, improving liver function and inhibiting histamine release.*

Cordyceps, (Cordyceps sinensis)
Human clinical studies indicate that Cordyceps helps lower LDL cholesterol and plasma triglycerides. Cordyceps also supports the health of the kidneys and improves renal function. Support of the kidneys is particularly useful when dealing with hypertension. Cordyceps is blood building and a tonic that supports the lungs, kidneys, heart, immune system, liver, and adrenal glands.*

Flavonoids

Flavonoids, or phenolic antioxidants, have been shown to eliminate oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen-centered free radicals by donating to them the single electron they need to be non-reactive in the body. By helping neutralize the free radicals that would cause damage and aging to the cells of the cardiovascular system, flavonoids work as potent anti-aging factors. Flavonoids often possess powerful anti-inflammatory,
anti-thrombotic, antiviral, vasodilatory, antimutagenic, antibacterial, and anti-neoplastic actions.*

Anthocyanidins are an active type of flavonoid. These antioxidants help protect the body from oxidative stress, one of several biological processes involved in aging and degenerative diseases (including cardiovascular disease).*

The cardio-protective and stress reduction effects of Rhodiola have been shown in many studies. Rhodiola rosea has also been shown to help prevent heart arrhythmia.*

Hawthorn Leaf, Berry and Flower (Crataegus spp.)
Hawthorn is the premier cardio tonic and possesses powerful antioxidant activity. It is included in this formula for general cardiovascular support, connective tissue stabilization, and flavonoid content. Hawthorn works to increase blood supply to cardiac muscle and assists in proper functioning.*

This plant has a positive effect upon blood pressure when taken over a period of time. Hawthorn has mild ACE inhibiting properties. ACE stands for angiotensin-converting enzyme, the enzyme in the endothelial tissue which converts angiotensin 1 to the powerful vasoconstrictor angiotensin 2. By inhibiting this enzyme, one can reduce the amount of vasoconstriction and ultimately lower blood pressure.*

Hawthorn and Linden are often used together as a primary treatment for hypertension, particularly when blood pressure is raised and associated with arteriosclerosis and nervous tension. Linden has a reputation as a prophylactic against the development of arteriosclerosis and hypertension, according to the herbalist, author, clinician, and teacher, David Hoffmann.*

GingerRhizome, Root (Zingiber officinale)

It is believed that ginger facilitates the transformation of cholesterol into bile salts and supports the biliary excretion of excess cholesterol. Ginger improves blood viscosity by supporting the reduction of platelet aggregation. It reduces oxidative and inflammatory damage to vascular cells. Ginger is known to possess potent cardiotonic activity. It is also considered a potentiator that enhances the action of other herbs when combined in a formula.*

Rosemary Leaf (Rosemarinus officinalis)

Blueberry Vaccinium angustifolium
In 1997 the scientists at Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University ranked blueberries number one in antioxidant activity compared with 50 commercially available fruits and vegetables. In tests, it scored higher ORAC units (oxygen radical absorbency capacity), otherwise known as “anti-aging points,” than every other fruit or vegetable tested.*

Blueberries possess antioxidant properties that neutralize free radicals and strengthen the vascular system. Proanthocyanins stabilize

Pomegranate Concentrate: (Punica granatum L.)
Research indicates that the polyphenols in pomegranate protect Low Density Lipoproteins from oxidation, which can lead to arteriolosclerosis, heart attack, stroke, and possibly Alzheimers and dementia. Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants associated with inhibition of atherogenic modifications to LDL, macrophage foam cell formation, and atherosclerosis. Pomegranate juice also reduces platelet aggregation.*

Recent studies published in 2000 demonstrate the usefulness of pomegranate in preventing arterial plaque formation. A human study in Israel found that pomegranate juice reduced oxidation of LDL cholesterol by 43%. This study also found that atherosclerotic lesions shrank by 44 percent. An additional study found that, in patients with diseased arteries, as little as four ounces of pomegranate juice a day for one year actually decreased the size of lesions in their carotid arteries. “It’s conceivable,” the author says, “that increased consumption of pomegranates may even help atherosclerosis regress naturally, before patients have to resort to angioplasty and bypass surgery”.*

Garlic Bulb (Allium sativum)
Garlic offers immense cardiovascular benefits that can help lower the risk of atherosclerosis, including the reduction of hardening arteries, which may ultimately lead to heart attack, stroke, and other heart conditions. Clinical studies have demonstrated that garlic improves the ratio of desirable High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) to harmful Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL). It also lowers blood pressure, inhibits platelet aggregation, improves overall circulation, and protects the coronary arteries against age related stiffening.*
 
Garlic contains more than 200 compounds identified to date. Its actions include anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. Proanthocyanins (PCOS) have demonstrated a wide range of pharmacological activity. They support intracellular levels of vitamin C and decrease capillary permeability and fragility. Watercress is a crucifer in the Brassicaceae family. The spicy taste of watercress is attributed to the Isothiocyanate, called phenethyl isothiocyanate or PEITC. PEITC appears to fight lung cancer and other cancers caused by the cancer-causing nitrosamines in tobacco smoke. This green vegetable is rich in potassium and protective compounds.*

Rice Bran
Rice Bran is abundant in nutrients, including Gamma oryzanol, beta sitosteryl ferluate, and five other related compounds. These are potent antioxidants and trace nutrients which play a vital role in so many aspects of human physiology that they suggest a symbiotic relationship between fresh rice and humans. Gamma oryzanol is found only in rice bran.*
