Coleus forskohlii is native to areas in the lower elevations of India. This species is named after Swedish Naturalist Peter Forskal who is credited with its discovery. Coleus is a member of the Lamiaceae or Mint family and smells like camphor. It is no wonder that this plant has been researched by the drug companies for its anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used for over 3,000 years in Ayurvedic Medicine. In ancient Sanskrit texts it is known as Makandi and was said to have been used for supporting healthy functioning heart and lungs, and a number of other functions in the body.*
Ginger and her cousin Turmeric are proud members of the zingiberaceae family and grow in sub-tropical, volcanic soils in the southern hemispheres. The plant is thought to have originated in tropical Asia and is widely cultivated in the Caribbean and Africa. All cultures report similar uses of this plant. It has been used as a favorite “diffusive” circulatory stimulant and heating agent; calming nausea, removing phlegm or catarrh in a wet cough. It has also been used to support a healthy inflammatory response. Ginger is also widely used for motion sickness. Ginger is one of the most widely consumed aromatic spices on the planet.*
Through archaeological carbon dating it was discovered that Green Tea leaves were first boiled in water over 500,000 years ago. It has been cultivated in India and China and Japan for hundreds of centuries and has been used for at least five thousand years to support digestion, promote a healthy cardiovascular system, promote healthy metabolism of sugars, provide support for clear thinking and encourage an energetic lifestyle. Its consumption worldwide is second only to water. Green tea comes from the unfermented leaves of the Camellia sinensis shrub, while oolong tea is partially fermented, and black tea is fully fermented and has the highest caffeine and lowest antioxidant activity. Green tea has been shown to have the some of the highest antioxidant activity of any plant known. It was shown to have more antioxidant capacity than both Vitamin C and Vitamin E in a study conducted in 1989.*
The botanical name refers to a hallmark property of this plant; glukos (Sweet in Greek) and riza (root). Glycyrrhizin, a cortisone like chemical found in high proportions in the root is said to be 50 times sweeter than sucrose. Licorice has many uses and is considered a tonic plant in many traditional medicinal systems. It has been used to support a healthy stomach lining, support healthy lung and respiratory function and promote a healthy adrenal response. It is a member of the Fabaceae family and the species mentioned above are widely distributed in Turkey, The Middle East, China, India, Southern Europe including Spain and Sicily, Asia, Outer Mongolia and Western Siberia. It has been used in commerce as a flavoring agent for confections, liquers, and tobacco for centuries.*
