An orthopedic surgeon, a film producer, and a corporate strategist walk into a bar...wait, no, they start a beverage company...what happens? A revolution, that's what. In 2004, Dr. Alex Hughes, Josh Simon, and Dayton Miller embarked on a mission: to improve the lives of their friends and family. Although the goal was simple, the results of their venture would forever change the beverage industry.
In medical school, Dr. Alex realized that many of the powerful, all-natural ingredients he used to treat patients were available to the public, yet not widely known about or utilized. This observation sparked an idea: what if he could use these potent ingredients in the form of innovative beverages, making their health benefits accessible to everyone? Consumers were still relying on centuries old vitamin-based ingredients to improve their health and it was time to give them products with real results.
While conducting the initial research in a laboratory built in his kitchen, there were many spills and explosions, but also plenty of breakthroughs. Dr. Alex's experiments were revolutionary--bringing technology, ingredients, and functionality never before seen to the beverage industry. With long-time friends Josh and Dayton, Function Drinks launched in southern California in mid-2005. Instantly, the company gained a strong consumer following, including many celebrity fans like singer Fergie of the Black-Eyed Peas and NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal.
Today, the function line-up--sold worldwide--consists of ten powerful beverages delivering eight relevant functionalities with concrete and proven results. And thankfully for Dr. Alex's neighbors, the beverages are now developed with a team of food scientists in sophisticated beverage laboratories. |
 |
With a technical and sophisticated look, Function is drawing more attention than ever on the shelves. Unified under the banner of concrete science, each drink touts its own unique and powerful functionality. The presence of the "created by physicians" seal, displayed on the front of all Function drinks, is serious business. It's one of the many things that sets them apart from the other so-called functional drinks on the market.
The presence of their seal means a commitment to:
- Producing products that reflect the latest understanding of health, science, and physiology
- Constantly evaluating and updating products to reflect health innovations or breakthroughs
- Developing products founded in mainstream, proven clinical science
- Creating products with the highest quality natural ingredients used by doctors everyday

Brainiac is based on targeted antioxidant synergy and supports mental acuity, healthy mood, and memory without the use of stimulants. Mood, memory, and cognitive function are complex processes of the central nervous system. These processes are diverse and involve many different centers within the human brain. Age, stress, fatigue, and pollutants degrade and impact these processes over time.* Under conditions of stress and fatigue the ratios of neurotransmitters change in response to hormonal variations. Neurotransmitters are the signaling molecules that cells in the brain use to communicate with each other. They can be thought of as the current between cells in the complex cellular electrical circuit within the brain. Each neighborhood in the circuitrepresents a different region or center of function in the brain (e.g., mood, memory, movement, etc). Brain function is based on both the frequency of communications between cells, the neurotransmitters used (each has a different function), and the architecture/orientation of the cells themselves.* Hormonal conditions change during period of stress and fatigue. In other words, bioactive molecules released in other parts of the body can in the short term change the nature of the communications between cells in the brain (by increasing or decreasing release of certain neurotransmitters). Moreover, with increasing age, the actual architecture of relevant brain centers changes. This process is often sped up in the setting of chronic fatigue, pollutants, and other states, often though a free radical oxidative mechanism. Under these conditions, cell dysfunction in key centers in the brain is sped up by exposure to a higher baseline level of free radicals. Free radicals cause damage to cellular membranes and cellular DNA and cause programmed cell death if they overwhelm a cell's protective mechanisms. Over time the ratios of cell types, the density of overall cells, and the efficiency of brain function declines.* It is known that in certain age-related brain processes there is a reduction in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the hippocampus (which is the brain center integral in memory and cognitive function). It is believed that this is due to age-dependent dendritic spine loss of pyramidal neurons. In other words, with natural aging, our neuronal cells become less capable of supporting elaborate membrane architecture and structure. As the dendrites (long finger-like projections that point out into the gap between cells) decline, the number of these projections decrease. As a result, they are capable of less complex signaling with adjacent cells. Eventually, with further decline, the cells undergo programmed cell elimination. Unfortunately, for the most part, central neuronal cells are unable to replicate themselves. Once cells disappear, they cannot be replaced.*
Studies have linked PS supplementation with support of dendritic density in the hippocampus and acetylcholine levels. Therefore, some theorize that phosphatidylserine supports healthy cognitive function through its effect on pyramidal neurons–which in turn leads to support of natural acetylcholine levels.*
Through observation, many theorize that antioxidants which exert an effect on the central nervous system (cross the blood-brain barrier) play a supportive role in normal memory, cognitive function, and mood. It is theorized that ginkgo biloba exerts in part an antioxidant effect on the brain. Some recent studies have also illustrated the importance of antioxidant synergy–that is, delivering several antioxidants with similar bio-availability, or similar tissue preference for exerting activity (ginkgo, vitamin E, zinc) to their target tissues. Therefore, the antioxidants remain stable and in their useful form when they arrive in the brain. Without antioxidant synergy, or by not stabilizing antioxidants with other antioxidants in the solution, there is a risk of antioxidants losing their efficacy in solution or upon ingestion in other parts of the body en route to the brain. In this way, the antioxidant emulsion in Brainiac is stable and arrives in the central nervous system in a potent state.*
We all have a unique genetic predisposition for our baseline mood and cognitive function which is then affected by our health and environment. By making smart choices we can maximize our potential.* |
