Black Walnut Coptis Supreme Liquid Extract (Alcohol Free) is a blend of walnut, Coptis, Skullcap, Pau D'Arco, Oregano, Red Clover, Ginger, Tea Tree, and Thyme. This extract is said to provide broad spectrum support for healthy microorganism balance,  as indicated in studies.*

Black Walnut Hulls come from the immature fruit of the Black Walnut Tree (Juglans nigra). They support healthy fungi levels and genitourinary function. References to the use of Black Walnut Hulls dates back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and they have been used by many cultures throughout history as an herbal tonic. Indigenous to the Middle East, the Black Walnut Tree is is currently grown in the U.S., Canada and Europe as well.*

Ginger
Ginger and her cousin Turmeric are proud members of the zingiberaceae family and grow in sub-tropical, volcanic soils in the southern hemispheres. The plant is thought to have originated in tropical Asia and is widely cultivated in the Caribbean and Africa. All cultures report similar uses of this plant. It has been used as a favorite “diffusive” circulatory stimulant and heating agent; calming nausea, removing phlegm or catarrh in a wet cough. It has also been used to support a healthy inflammatory response. Ginger is also widely used for motion sickness. Ginger is one of the most widely consumed aromatic spices on the planet.*

Gaia Herbs utilizes all manners of Ginger in its product offerings each one specifically indicated for its proper use and all of them are Certified Organic. For example Rejuve Powder contains whole powdered Organic Ginger, Sweetish Bitters contains fresh juiced Ginger, Ginger Supreme Liquid Phyto-Caps contain a SuperCritical extract of Ginger as well as an ethanolic extract of Ginger. Gaia Herbs grows Ginger Organically on its Certified Organic farm on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica; one of the youg roots of Blue Ring Ginger is shown above. Oregano
The Oregano plant is native to Europe, the Mediterranean and southern Asia. It has tiny hair like glands on its surface called trichomes which reflect the intense rays of the sun. Thisis a trait common to most plants in the Lamiaceae or Mint family. The trichomes synthesize and accumulate essential oils and phenols which protect the plant from oxidation while allowing it to survive in dry and hot conditions with direct exposure to intense sunlight. Oregano was used primarily as a culinary spice and medicinal plant for coughs, stomach distress, and topically for wounds and inflammation but also as an ornamental in gardens. It was used to preserve meat in ancient times before refrigeration was available, as were other spices which contain high amounts of volatile oils like Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and Rosemary (Rosmarinus off.). The intuitive use of these herbs to combat bacterial growth has since been scientifically validated.*

Skullcap
Skullcap is a member of the lamiaceae (mint) family and native to China. Its Pin yin name is Huang Qin and it is sometimes referred to as Baical Skullcap, or Scute. It is very bitter and has a cold energetic nature. In traditional Chinese Medicine this plant was used (almost always in combination with other plants or foods), to clear heat, dry damp, drain fire, and resolve toxins (it is used to support normal immune function). The roots are the preferred part and are collected in the spring and autumn with the outer cork and rootlets removed.*

Gaia Herbs tests its Chinese Skullcap for activity during the pre-purchase phase of manufacturing, during the quarantine phase of extraction while the microbiological and pharmacological testing are being completed, and finally during the finished extract phase. The analytical lab also tests the plant material and finished product for heavy metal toxicity. Xiping Wang Ph.D. the chief Chemist at Gaia Herbs is trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as holding Doctorates in Pharmacy and Natural Products Chemistry. Natural products vary widely in concentration due to the fact that they degrade quickly if not harvested, stored, and extracted properly. This is why Gaia Herbs also conducts shelf stability testing in an accelerated stability chamber that mimics the effects of temperature, time, and atmospheric pressure on the finished product. All of this ensures that the medicinal properties described above achieve their end result. Gaia Herbs captures the essence of Natures Vitality.*

Technical Comments
Ginger contains hundreds of chemical components. The highest percentages of chemicals are the volatile oils (camphene, phellandrene, zingiberine, zingiberol, eucalyptol, citral, borneol, and linalol) and the phenolic compounds (gingerol, zingerone, shogaols) and resins. The fresh rhizome is less hot and contains more of the flavor components such as triterpenoids and volatile oils which act on the peripheries of the body. The dried rhizome is quite hot from its concentration of pungent nonvolatile compounds known as gingerols and acts centrally to dispel what are referred to in Traditional Chinese Medicine as “Cold-Wind” conditions. Ginger has been shown in numerous clinical trials to work as well as or better than Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory medicines without the adverse events reported such as gastric mucosal irritation and ulceration. It is thought that Ginger promotes normal production of Thromboxanes and Leukotrienes which would explain its action on the immune system as well as its ability to promote healthy circulation and inflammatory responses. Numerous studies used dried powdered ginger and fresh ginger and had very positive results with humans. Powdered dried ginger root demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in 56 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or mysositis (muscle inflammation) when taken daily in one to two gram amounts. Pain was moderately or markedly reduced by 75% in all three categories of patients. (see references).*

The Oregano plant is loaded with volatile oils. It is so spicy that chewing a fresh leaf will numb your tongue. The main volatile oils that have been researched in this plant are Carvacrol, Thymol, Eugenol and 1, 8 cineole. The plant also contains appreciable amounts of Rosmarinic acid and other antioxidants. The essential oils have been tested almost exclusively in vitro for pharmacological activity and though there have been some in vivo studies wide differences in test parameters and the use of adulterated and synthetic compounds make test results difficult to compare. It is thought that the anti-microbial action of essential oils in the lungs is achieved when they are exhaled after being metabolized in the bloodstream. Essential oils in Oregano were found adversely effect the ability of Candida albicans to reproduce.*

Gaia Herbs Oil of Oregano contains a liquid Super-Critical oil of Wild Mediterranean Oregano Leaf. Super-Critical extraction uses pressurized Carbon Dioxide to efficiently extract the highest percentage of oil soluble components possible without the use of solvents such as Acetone and Hexane (Dry Cleaning Solvents…) These are standard solvents for the commercial extraction of many herbs. Gaia Herbs uses only Super-Critical Extraction, Alcohol and Water to produce its botanical medicines. One Oil of Oregano Liquid Phyto-Cap contains the equivalent of almost SIX crude herb capsules. Each capsule if Whole Plant Standardized to contain a precise amount (32mg) of Carvacrol per capsule. Gaia is the only herb manufacturer producing a liquid, non-oil based, vegetarian capsule with a Whole-Plant standardized Extract. Gaia Herbs captures the essence of Natures Vitality.*

Skullcap is very chemically complex and is loaded with antioxidants known as flavones. The flavones of particular interest have been Baicalin and Baicalein. These antioxidants appear to downregulate the effects of oxidative stress on various tissues in the body including the liver. More research is needed to fully understand the exact mechanism of this plants pharmacological activity.
