What is the INCI?
You may notice the letters "INCI" listed under some ingredients. The International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) is a system for labeling and declaring ingredients. The multilingual and multinational labeling requirements implemented by the European Union require a full declaration of ingredients on personal care packaging. This labeling standard denotes all ingredients according to their Latin (Chemical / Scientific) designation. Those manufacturers following the INCI are therefore required to label their ingredients as specified by the regulatory board.  All companies selling personal care products in Europe and Canada are required by law to list their ingredients according to the INCI. All ingredients are listed by their quantity of presence, greatest to least, in the product. Due to its full ingredient disclosure policy, the INCI standards strive to allow the consumer to make informed and healthy purchases, helping him/her avoid any ingredients to which he/she may be allergic.

Weleda Mission

History:  Pioneering organic body care and anthroposophic medicine since 1921

The wonders of Weleda began in 1921 in the scenic town of Arlesheim, Switzerland. This now global company blossomed from a pharmaceutical facility developed by Dutch medical doctor Ita Wegman and renowned Austrian philosopher Dr. Rudolf Steiner, to provide unique remedies and body care preparations. All remedies, as they remain today, were exclusively derived from nature.

Through such values, the ideals of Weleda spread to the United States, resulting in the creation of Weleda North America inthe USA in 1922, as an independent licensing operation from Weleda Switzerland.

Weleda North America went through a vast array of growth processes, from the harvesting of its own medicinal herbs and biodynamic gardens in New York during the onset of World War II, to the re-unification with its parent group, Weleda AG, in 1995. Weleda North America is now a fully-owned subsidiary of its Swiss parent and a part of the international Weleda Group, which houses offices in more than 30 countries throughout the world. Through such evolution and growth, Weleda has remained true to its founding principles and philosophy, "In harmony with nature and the human being."

Philosophy:In harmony with nature and the human being

All elements of Weleda, from the name, logo, ingredients, methods of formulation, packaging and people, resound this intrinsic philosophy: "In harmony with nature and the human being."

In 1921, Weleda pioneered the use of biodynamic and organic ingredients in the personal care industry. Since this time, Weleda has adhered to these original quality standards, continuing to use biodynamic and organic ingredients to create its unique preparations. All formulations are free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants and parabens, and the ingredients and finished products are never tested on animals.

Weleda pure plant extracts and ingredients are harvested throughout the world, either from our own gardens, or through contractual partnerships with farmers. We work with local farmers, helping them convert their conventional farms into sustainable, organic agriculture. Through these Fair Trade agreements, Weleda offers economic and social support to these communities. Such practices uphold Weleda's founding virtue, "In harmony with nature and the human being."

Weleda Ingredients

Weleda’s Quality Begins In Nature
The Garden is where it all begins. The quality of the soil, seed and plant reflects the quality of our finished product. Weleda is a leader in biodynamic farming, a highly regulated, chemical-free agricultural method that was popularized by Weleda's founder. Over 250 varieties of healing plants are grown in their company gardens worldwide.

Weleda's motto, “In harmony with nature and the human being,” represents our upholding of the highest quality and environmental conservation through every step of the value chain—from soil to product.

Weleda products are therefore free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants and raw materials derived from mineral oils. Additionally, animal testing is not carried out by Weleda or by their suppliers on their behalf. Weleda products are instead full of the highest quality, pure and natural ingredients for your body.

From an environmental and global sustainability perspective, one of Weleda's top priorities is to increase their share of raw materials from organic and biodynamic sources. Weleda is convinced that these kinds of raw materials yield the highest quality for medicine and body care products.

The Weleda Name
The name Weleda [Wa-lay-da] was chosen by Dr. Steiner to honor the ancient tradition of Celtic women healers. "Weledas" were Celtic wise women who guided their followers to an understanding of nature. Historical remnants of these people can be found in Ireland, Germany and France.

According to the Roman historian Tacitus, the last individual to bear the name Weleda was a priestess of healing and a prophetess who lived at the beginning of the Christian era. She belonged to a tribe of Brukturers and lived near Eastern Stones, a famous sanctuary on the banks of the Lippe River in modern day Germany. People came from distant places to seek her advice and her blessing for contracts and agreements. Under Weleda's influence, the Brukturers joined forces with other Germanic tribes, repelling Roman invaders, until the Romans finally captured them.

Ultimately, peace was established, but the Romans feared the influence that Weleda had over their people, so they took her captive in Rome, where she remained highly honored until 80 A.D., when she died.

Weleda became revered as a renowned title of distinction and the designation of a powerful leader. True to its original name, Weleda strives to heal and nurture others, spreading our ideals throughout the world through our premier personal care formulations.
The Weleda Logo
Giving, Receiving, Healing, Uprightness, Truthfulness - Weleda's symbolic logo was designed by Dr. Steiner in 1921 to represent the act of giving and receiving, healing, uprightness and truthfulness.

The Logo Is Made Up Of Three Parts:

• Central upright staff
The central upright staff was inspired by Mercury, the messenger of the Gods. It stands for truth and dependability and symbolizes the connection between Heaven and Earth—the two realms covered by the trusted messenger.

• Weaving spiral form
The weaving spiral form represents the serpent, the symbol of healing.

• Two interacting outer segments
The two interacting outer segments were conceived by Rudolf Steiner without any ancient or mythological references. These components encompass protection and social interaction, along with the acts of giving and receiving, as well as producing and consuming. The entire exterior also represents the inborn and closely-tied relationship between a physician and his/her patient.

The Complete Logo
The complete symbol communicates the upright quality and integrity that is inherent to Weleda. It also refers to the therapeutic impulses and purity of Weleda's formulations, derived from a deep understanding of Anthroposophy. Overall, Weleda's logo transmits the company's innate social awareness, responsibility and appreciation for nature and humans.

From Plant To Product

Harvesting Plants
Life brings life, so at Weleda, all plants—biodynamic, organic, wild-crafted and natural—are processed immediately after they are harvested. Weleda's dedicated farmers and partners work with great care to clean the roots, peel off the bark and hand-select the best blossoms and leaves. Whole plants are often used to treat the entire being, while selected plant components are also extracted, such as the roots, seeds, bark, leaves, blossoms and fruits.

Unlocking Nature
After this initial preparation, the form of the plant must be broken down through grinding, squeezing or cutting so that it can unfold its healing forces.

Transmitting Messages
This active plant blend is then combined with a solution, such as organic alcohol and water. This tincture carries an "imprint" or life message of the plant.

Extracting for Formulas
The therapeutic application of the final formulation plays a crucial role in the elaborate extraction methods that follow. For instance, the rhythmical processing and temperature of extraction are specifically altered for the creation of each individual formula. Through these processes, the natural elements of the plant are further extracted.

Purifying Tinctures
Finally, the remaining matter is separated from the tincture through a process of filtration or pressing.

Protecting and Storing
Like all other pure, raw materials harvested and used by Weleda, these tinctures are subject to strict quality control. Each batch is carefully examined in Weleda's analytic laboratory, and each tincture is then meticulously stored in stoneware or glass containers in Weleda's cellar.

Continuing the Journey
This life-encapsulated tincture may then be blended with other extracts and raw materials for use in the end-formula of both medicines and personal care products.

Quality Throughout
Weleda products are subject to strict quality standards. They are produced according to the European Union (EU) Guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practice, which regulates European standards for the production of active ingredients and bulk goods. All quality controls are carried out in contract laboratories under Weleda's supervision. New analytical procedures are continuously developed in order to maintain the highest possible standards.

Weleda production is certified according to the EU-Eco-Regulation. All raw materials are free of GMOs, and the vast majority of the raw materials they use are from organic or biodynamic sources.
Frequently Asked Questions About Weleda

Q. Why Weleda Body Care?
A. Since 1921, Weleda has pioneered the use of biodynamic and organic ingredients in body care and medicines to promote natural harmony and health. Weleda’s purest ingredients—natural, organic, biodynamic and wild crafted—come directly from nature and are cultivated with the loving hands of dedicated farmers throughout the world. We create premier, naturally therapeutic body care that captures the harmony of nature. When you pamper your skin with our soothing preparations, you will experience a vitality that only nature can bring.

Q. How does Weleda preserve its formulations?
A. All of our premier formulations are preserved with natural ingredients. We use organic grain alcohol, natural essential oils and pure plant extracts to maintain the life of our products. Furthermore, our unique and recyclable packaging protects each formulation and helps to prevent against oxidation. As a result of these naturally effective preservation techniques, it is not necessary to refrigerate our products. All product life information can be found on the inner and outer packaging.

Q. How does Weleda color and fragrance its products?
A. Weleda’s products are naturally colored with the essential plant extracts that make up each pure formula. All formulas are naturally fragranced with essential oils and plant extracts. Weleda does not use any synthetic colors or fragrances.

Q. Does Weleda use any synthetic ingredients?
A. Weleda uses only natural oils and plant extracts. All Weleda products are FREE of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants and raw materials derived from mineral oils, as well as genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Weleda products are instead FULL of the highest quality, pure and natural ingredients for your body.

Q. How does Weleda test the efficacy of its products?
A. Weleda does not test its ingredients or personal care products on animals. It is unnecessary for us to do so, as the plant materials that make up our pure formulations have been used internally and externally for countless centuries. Long before animal-testing was introduced, all “testing” was done on humans, establishing a system of trial and error. Thus, many materials were established as safe and effective. As a result, Weleda's use of raw materials has a long history of safe usage. We ensure that our biodynamically grown ingredients and those provided by our partners have not been tested on animals.

Q. What is biodynamic cultivation?
A. Biodynamic and organic farming methods are similar to one another in that they both work to enhance the soil and cultivate plants that are free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Biodynamic cultivation, however, goes a step further, beyond organic. Homeopathic preparations are used to enhance the vitality of the plants. Each plant is harvested by hand at its peak, according to the season, time of day, and position of the planets in the universe. At Weleda, we view the earth as an interconnected living organism. Plants, animals and human beings have an inherent and beautiful relationship with one another and their surroundings. Our philosophy, “In harmony with nature and the human being,” lies deep within the principle of biodynamics.

Q. Why do some Weleda products contain alcohol?
A. In homeopathic remedies and tinctures, alcohol is traditionally used to draw out the vital life forces of a plant to create a botanical extract in a specific concentration. Alcohol is also used as a natural preservative in our formulations. Weleda uses organic grain alcohol, which is naturally derived from fermented plant sugars. We do not use Methyl or Propyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol).

Q. How are natural essential oils denoted on Weleda’s packaging?
A. According to the INCI labeling standards, all fragrances (which for Weleda represent all natural essential oils) are prefaced and denoted by a triple asterisk (***) to denote "From Natural Essential Oils".

According to the European Union Mediation Committee’s 2005 resolution, 26 fragrances—present in over 10ppm (parts per million)—found to cause allergies in sensitive individuals must be declared on all personal care ingredient listings. These fragrances are listed by their individual components according to their chemical names. As a result, Rose Oil,for instance, which contains over 400 components, many of which have not even been discovered, is no longer listed as “Rose Oil” on the packaging, but by its individual parts, such as “Geraniol.”

While only 1-3% of the population has been found to have any allergy to a fragrance, this regulation has been implemented in order to inform those consumers with allergies of all ingredients that make up a product. Most often, a person is not allergic to the complete fragrance/essential oil, such as Rose Oil, but rather its components.*

Weleda uses all natural essential oils. By EU law, these natural ingredients are listed under the same name and designations as their synthetic counterparts, regardless of their origin. Natural essential oils—particularly when blended with other essential oils, rather than in isolated form—are generally well-tolerated by the skin and provide numerous physical and psychological benefits.

Q. What is Glycerin and why does Weleda use it?
A. Glycerin is a threefold alcohol found in every fat. Weleda uses Glycerin derived from rapeseed (Brassica napus). Glycerin is produced through the saponification process of vegetable oil and soap. It regulates the absorption and release of water, softening and smoothing the skin.

Q. What is Lanolin and why does Weleda use it?
A. Lanolin is a wax derived from the wool of sheep. The process of extracting this wool does not harm the sheep in any way, as the shearing of wool is a natural and necessary process. Weleda uses the highest quality Lanolin from sheep in Australia and New Zealand. The Lanolin is cleaned to remove any pesticide residues. We use Lanolin to nourish and protect the skin. Lanolin contains natural fats that give it an affinity to the skin, making it an ideal moisturizer.

Q. What is Magnesium Aluminum Silicate and why does Weleda use it?
A. Magnesium Aluminum Silicate (Fuller’s Earth) is a naturally occurring mineral. Its name is the standard label applied to natural earth of various origins. Other commonly known names for this ingredient are Hectorite, Kaolin and White Clay. This clay serves as a natural thickener commonly used to hold ingredients together, providing a moisture-binding effect. The molecules of Magnesium Aluminum Silicate are too large to be absorbed through the skin, and it is a dermatologically well-tolerated material. This clay helps remove impurities from the skin in Weleda’s body care formulations and works as a gentle polisher in Weleda’s toothpastes.

Q. Does Weleda use allergy-tolerated Wheat Starch or Gluten in its products?
A. Weleda does use Wheat Starch/Gluten in the production of many medicine tablets. Many Weleda tablets contain Wheat Starch in a presence of up to 25 mg per tablet. In regards to associated allergy-concerns for those suffering from Celiac Disease, according to the German Celiac Disease Society, after washing out the albumen fraction from the wheat flour, the resulting pure wheat starch—containing less than .05% residual nitrogen (the so-called primary wheat starch) may be declared as being gluten-free.

Body Oils FAQ

Q.When is the best time to use Weleda Body Oils?
A. The best time to use body oils is when the skin is still moist—ideally after a bath or shower. When the skin is damp, it is able to draw in more of the benefits of the skin-softening properties contained in the body oils. Body oils may be used as regular, everyday body moisturizers, as well as specifically during a massage.*

Q. Will Weleda Body Oils clog my pores?
A.Weleda Body Oils will not clog your pores. They use only the purest oils that are easily absorbed by the skin, such as organic Sesame Seed, organic Olive, organic Jojoba and Sweet Almond Oil. No mineral or petroleum oils are used. Weleda Body Oils leave the skin feeling soft and rejuvenated.*

Q. Is body oil better than lotion for treating extremely dry skin?
A. Weleda body oils are the perfect choice for treating very dry skin. Weleda’s Wild Rose Body Oil and Sea Buckthorn Body Oil are especially good choices due to their nourishing properties. Body oil helps maintain the skin’s health between applications, whereas body lotions tend to evaporate faster because they contain water. Thus, when the skin is extremely dry, we suggest using a body oil. For optimal protection of dry skin on the hands and face, try Weleda Skin Food and Weleda Everon Face Balm.*

Q.Which Weleda Body Oil do you recommend for a massage?
A. All Weleda oils may be used for any kind of massage: foot massage, hand massage, neck massage, relaxing massage or sports massage. Arnica Massage Oil is the preferred choice by thousands of massage therapists throughout the world. Weleda also suggests Lavender Body Oil for a calming massage before bedtime. All of Weleda’s massage oils are rich in plant oils which support the elasticity of the skin. Also, because they are absorbed into the skin over time, they are ideal for use during a pampering or therapeutic massage.*
