How Green Foods Corporation Processes Its Barley GrassFirst, and foremost, we grow our barley grass using certified organic farming methods in the rich, fertile soil of the Oxnard Plains in southern California. Every year or two, the fields are rotated with legume crops in order to replenish the soil. We use only natural, organic methods of pest control, including friendly insects like ladybugs. The barley grass in Green Magma and our other Magma products is certified organic. But organic growing is only part of the story. State-of-the-art organic processing methods developed by our founder, Dr. Hagiwara, are required in order to ensure a highly nutritious product that contains active enzymes. Green Foods Corporation uses an expensive temperature-controlled, multi-step process that gently extracts the nutrient-rich juice from barley grass and then spray-dries it into a powder, which protects and stabilizes the enzymes, vitamins and other phytonutrients.  Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara was a world-renowned pharmaceutical scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, and President of Japan Product Development Co. in Osaka, Japan. He graduated from Kumamoto University in Japan as a research pharmacologist and, early in his career, developed several highly successful drug formulas. He soon went on to establish Yamashiro Pharmaceutical Company, a leading Japanese pharmaceutical company. As Dr. Hagiwara grew aware of the problems caused by the many chemicals used in modern medicine, he vowed to devote his life to a natural nutritional approach to health. After years of research on over 200 types of plants, including fruits, vegetables, grasses, and herbs, he found that "young barley grass is one of the most nutritionally balanced foods in nature." In order to capture and protect the delicate nutrients and enzymes in freshly harvested young barley grass, he developed a unique extraction and spray-dry process that earned him Japan's prestigious Science and Technology Award.
