An Introduction To Weleda Medicines
Pioneering anthroposophic medicine since 1921
In 1921, Weleda began as a “Clinical Therapeutic Institute” founded by Dr. Ita Wegman in collaboration with Dr. Rudolf Steiner in Arlesheim, Switzerland. The first production of what are today known as Weleda medicines were formulated in this pharmaceutical laboratory.

Weleda’s medicines are based upon the principles of anthroposophy, developed by Dr. Rudolf Steiner. All Weleda medicines were and continue to be formulated from a wealth of knowledge. Dr. Steiner worked closely with physicians to create these remedies. Since this time, Weleda physicians and pharmacists have continued to create the finest natural remedies available. Today, over 3,500 proprietary anthroposophic and homeopathic medicines are produced by Weleda and are available over-the-counter (OTC) or by prescription as custom-compounded remedies.

Weleda holistic medicines are safe, effective and time-tested.  All Weleda remedies facilitate our body’s natural healing processes and abilities. Rather than simply masking symptoms, as is often the case in allopathic medicine, Weleda looks to symptoms as signs of imbalance within the body. An understanding can then be gained of how the body is naturally working to heal itself. Weleda medicines are therefore formulated to stimulate a patient’s innate self-healing powers and to restore and maintain the health of the individual.*

Weleda's remedies are administered in small, safe doses that treat an illness without unwanted side effects. All remedies, as they remain today, were exclusively derived from nature. Weleda takes the greatest care to retain the healing properties of medicinal plants at each stage of the production process. Weleda uses organically and/or biodynamically-grown plants, harvested in their own gardens or in cooperation with farming partners. Weleda's gentle production methods have been specially created to preserve and enhance the plants’ life forces. Through these techniques, the remedies are alive with the plant’s natural and essential healing properties. Weleda diligently monitors each step of the production process—from raw material to finished product—to give the preparations a special and premier quality which reveals itself when used.*

Although the product line and the production capabilities have expanded greatly, Weleda's basic principle of maintaining the highest quality standards while strictly adhering to natural methods has remained. The Rx (prescription) and OTC (Over-the-counter) medicines you will find are listed with FDA and hence have an NDC (National Drug Code) number, which enables your patients to submit their claims to Insurances for reimbursement. The ingredients are listed in the HPUS (Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the U.S.), which means that they are considered official and manufactured according to the standards set forth by the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia.

Through suchvalues, the ideals of Weleda have spread to the United States (which resulted in the creation of Weleda North America in the USA in 1922 as an independent licensing operation from Weleda Switzerland). Weleda North America went through a vast array of growth processes, from the harvesting of its own medicinal herbs and biodynamic gardens in New York during the onset of World War II, to the re-unification with its parent group, Weleda AG, in 1995. Weleda North America is now a fully-owned subsidiary of its Swiss parent and a part of the international Weleda Group, which houses offices in more than 30 countries throughout the world. Through such evolution and growth, Weleda has remained true to its founding principles and philosophy.
The Weleda Philosophy
In harmony with nature and the human being
All elements of Weleda – the name, logo, ingredients, methods of formulation, packaging and people – resound with this intrinsic philosophy: "In harmony with nature and the human being."

In 1921, Weleda pioneered the use of biodynamic and organic ingredients in the personal care industry. Since this time, Weleda has adhered to these original quality standards, continuing to use biodynamic and organic ingredients to create its unique preparations. All formulations are free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants and parabens, and the ingredients and finished products are never tested on animals.

Weleda pure plant extracts and ingredients are harvested throughout the world, either from Weleda gardens or through contractual partnerships with farmers. Weleda works with local farmers, helping them convert their conventional farms into sustainable, organic agriculture. Through these Fair Trade agreements, Weleda offers economic and social support to these communities. Such practices uphold Weleda's founding virtue, "In harmony with nature and the human being."
Weleda Ingredients

Weleda’s Quality Begins In Nature
The garden is where it all begins. The quality of the soil, seed and plant reflects the quality of the finished product. Weleda is a leader in biodynamic farming, a highly regulated, chemical-free agricultural method that was popularized by its founder. Over 250 varieties of healing plants are grown in Weleda company gardens worldwide.

The Weleda motto, “In harmony with nature and the human being,” represents upholding of the highest quality and environmental conservation through every step of the value chain—from soil to product.

Weleda products are therefore free of synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants and raw materials derived from mineral oils. Additionally, animal testing is not carried out by Weleda or by our suppliers on their behalf.  Weleda products are instead full of the highest quality, pure and natural ingredients for your body.

From an environmental and global sustainability perspective, one of Weleda's top priorities is to increase their share of raw materials from organic and biodynamic sources. They are convinced that these kinds of raw materials yield the highest quality for medicine and body care products.
The Weleda Name

The name Weleda [Wa-lay-da] was chosen by Dr. Steiner to honor the ancient tradition of Celtic healers. "Weledas" were Celtic wise women who guided their followers to an understanding of nature. Historical remnants of these people can be found in Ireland, Germany and France.

According to the Roman historian Tacitus, the last individual to bear the name Weleda was a priestess of healing and a prophetess who lived at the beginning of the Christian era. She belonged to a tribe of Brukturers and lived near Eastern Stones, a famous sanctuary on the banks of the Lippe River in modern day Germany. People came from distant places to seek her advice and her blessing for contracts and agreements. Under Weleda's influence, the Brukturers joined forces with other Germanic tribes, repelling Roman invaders, until the Romans finally captured them.

Ultimately, peace was established, but the Romans feared the influence that Weleda had over the people, so they took her captive in Rome, where she remained highly honored until her death in 80 A.D.

Weleda became revered as a renowned title of distinction and the designation of a powerful leader. True to its original name, Weleda strives to heal and nurture others, spreading our ideals throughout the world through our premier personal care formulations.
The Weleda Logo

Giving, Receiving, Healing, Uprightness, Truthfulness
Weleda's symbolic logo was designed by Dr. Steiner in 1921 to represent the act of giving and receiving, healing, uprightness and truthfulness.

The Logo Is Made Up Of Three Parts:

• Central upright staff
The central upright staff was inspired by Mercury, the messenger of the Gods. It stands for truth and dependability and symbolizes the connection between Heaven and Earth—the two realms covered by the trusted messenger.

• Weaving spiral form
The weaving spiral form represents the serpent, the symbol of healing.

• Two interacting outer segments
The two interacting outer segments were conceived by Rudolf Steiner without any ancient or mythological references. These components encompass protection and social interaction, along with the acts of giving and receiving, as well as producing and consuming. The entire exterior also represents the inborn and closely-tied relationship between a physician and his/her patient.

The Complete Logo
The complete symbol communicates the upright quality and integrity that is inherent to Weleda. It also refers to the therapeutic impulses and purity of Weleda's formulations, derived from a deep understanding of Anthroposophy. Overall, Weleda's logo transmits the company's innate social awareness, responsibility and appreciation for nature and humans.

From Plant To Product

Harvesting Plants
Life brings life, so at Weleda, all plants—biodynamic, organic, wild-crafted and natural—are processed immediately after they are harvested. Weleda's dedicated farmers and partners work with great care to clean the roots, peel off the bark and hand-select the best blossoms and leaves. Whole plants are often used to treat the entire being, while selected plant components are also extracted, such as the roots, seeds, bark, leaves, blossoms and fruits.

Unlocking Nature
After this initial preparation, the form of the plant must be broken down through grinding, squeezing or cutting so that it can unfold its healing forces.

Transmitting Messages
This active plant blend is then combined with a solution, such as organic alcohol and water. This tincture carries an "imprint" or life message of the plant.

Extracting for Formulas
The therapeutic application of the final formulation plays a crucial role in the elaborate extraction methods that follow. For instance, the rhythmical processing and temperature of extraction are specifically altered for the creation of each individual formula. Through these processes, the natural elements of the plant are further extracted.

Purifying Tinctures
Finally, the remaining matter is separated from the tincture through a process of filtration or pressing.

Protecting and Storing
Like all other pure, raw materials harvested and used by Weleda, these tinctures are subject to strict quality control. Each batch is carefully examined in our analytic laboratory, and each tincture is then meticulously stored in stoneware or glass containers in Weleda's cellar.

Continuing the Journey
This life-encapsulated tincture may then be blended with other extracts and raw materials for use in the end-formula of both medicines and personal care products.

Quality Throughout
Weleda products are subject to strict quality standards. They are produced according to the European Union (EU) Guidelines for Good Manufacturing Practice, which regulates European standards for the production of active ingredients and bulk goods. All quality controls are carried out in contract laboratories under Weleda's supervision. New analytical procedures are continuously developed in order to maintain the highest possible standards.

Weleda production is certified according to the EU-Eco-Regulation. All raw materials are free of GMOs, and the vast majority of the raw materials they use are from organic or biodynamic sources.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why does Weleda use alcohol in the remedies?
A. Traditionally, homoeopathic and herbal tinctures were made using a water and alcohol (ethanol) mixture. This stems from a time when herbs were extracted by soaking them in wine or spirits. Water and ethanol mixes are still the most common extraction method for tinctures and are now standard pharmaceutical practice.

One important reason ethanol is used in the production of Weleda remedies is that ethanol is able to extract more active ingredients than other substances used for extraction (glycerin or water alone). With a wider range of active ingredients, the therapeutic activity is broader and the remedy is more effective.

A second advantage of using alcohol for tinctures is that it acts as a preservative - bacteria, yeasts and molds generally do not grow in an ethanol concentration of around 20% or more. Another advantage of ethanol is that once it is ingested, it loses its preservative effect; therefore, it does not damage beneficial intestinal flora.

The small amounts of ethanol that are taken when using homoeopathic or herbal products are generally recognized as being harmless. For example, the standard 10 drop (or 0.5 ml) dose contains 2 drops (80 mg) of ethanol. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a newborn (3 kg) baby, should be given no more than 3 ml of ethanol in a single dose - this is about 30 times greater than the amount in a dose of herbal or homeopathic products. In comparison, an average slice of bread contains between 100 mg and 200 mg of ethanol.

Q. What kind of alcohol is used in the preparation of Weleda medicines?
A. In line with all Weleda product ingredients, their medicines are made with organic ethyl alcohol (ethanol) derived from organically grown grains such as corn, and are certified gluten-free. All phases of the production process, including fermentation, distillation, packaging and shipping, are done under strict organic guidelines.

Q. Does Weleda use Wheat Starch, and does this ingredient pose as an allergy concern?
A. Many of the Weleda tablets contain wheat starch in the quantity of no more than 25 mg per tablet. According to the German Celiac Disease Society, after the albumin fraction is washed out from the wheat flour, those products that contain less than .05% wheat starch may be declared as gluten-free. Weleda also follows the European Remedies Book, which allows a maximum presence of wheat starch as .048. Therefore, according to the European Union, Switzerland and all other countries that follow this guideline, Weleda only produces tablets made with gluten-free wheat starch. In the United States, however, there is no uniform standard for such labeling declarations. As a result, if you are allergic to gluten, we suggest that you contact your health provider before using these products.

Q. What is Iscador / Iscar
A. Iscador (Iscar in the US) is a preparation made from the Mistletoe plant (Viscum album), sometimes used in the treatment of some cancers.

Q. How long do the Weleda medicines last?
A. As a general guideline, while most medicines have a shelf life of at least 3 years, many potencies of 2X (D2) or less and some compounds have a shelf life of only 2 years.

Q. Why don't you use rubber droppers for dilutions?
A. Weleda does not use rubber droppers for dilutions because the risk of interaction between the rubber and the substances, which have no preservatives, is too great.
