Aboca was founded in 1978 and from the beginning its principal objective has been to bring to the modern consumer medicinal herbal products as tools to promote health and well being. | Aboca understood that in order to achieve these objectives it needed to resolve a few important problems that had not been seriously dealt with, issues such as obtaining standardized and high quality raw materials void of pollutants; assessing the phytochemical profile of these materials; verifying the effectiveness of traditional remedies; obtaining concentrated derivatives in order to create modern forms of consumption such as drops and capsules.
Theresolution of these important problems was found in "vertical production." Through the refinement of agronomic and manufacturing processes and through collaboration with universities in this field, Aboca responded to these issues and was able to meet its principal objective. It began experimenting with organic production on its own land, which allowed Aboca to obtain raw materials without the use of chemical substances and to cultivate the variety of plants with the highest content of active ingredients. Aboca researched and developed cultivation techniques specific to each species, as well as methods for combatting insects and parasites without the use of pesticides. It designed new machines specialized to process medicinal herbs, and created modern and innovative drying ovens and harvesting machines in order to capture the essence of the medicinal herbs. | During this time Aboca developed the company's first important patented process. This process utilized a new way of conserving the medicinal herbs by vacuum-packing. This method offers notable advantages over traditional techniques. At the same time Aboca focused on the chemical research of cultivated species along with the creation of specialized processing machinery that allowed it to concentrate active ingredients in order to create modern forms of herbal remedies such as drops, capsules, and tablets.
The first derivative products were alcohol extracts used to make drops and highly concentrated capsules containing the "Total Concentrate," another important company patent that consists of blending the dried extract with the micronized powder of the same herb, avoiding the use of inert excipients. The objective of augmenting the concentration of the phytocomplex is still important for the company, which in recent years, with a rise in public knowledge and technology, has created other great innovations: freeze-dried extracts and tablets without excipients. These last twenty years have witnessed both a scientific and financial growth in the medicinal herb market, which has gone from being an area of special interest to an alternative health aid for everyone. Aboca believes it has contributed to this evolution. It has always invested in the development and diffusion of a scientific culture of medicinal plants-financing scholarships in scientific research, organizing courses and seminars for doctors, pharmacists and herbalists, and publishing books and articles. Today, tangible proof of Aboca's commitment is represented by the sponsoring of various university courses in herbalist techniques and in particular in its collaboration with the University of Padua. Another important commitment has always been to promote a law regulating the entire process from production to distribution for the protection of the consumer. Certainly, in these twenty years the herbal sector has made great strides forward, but we believe that we are still only at the beginning and will continue to work to always bring our contribution of innovation and knowledge. |

The goods produced in the agricultural sector of the Aboca Company offer the following guarantees:
- Presence and levels of active ingredients in all raw materials are checked;
- Homogeneity and standardization of plants harvested for processing;
- Absence of pesticides and other pollutant residues in accordance with current legislation governing organic farming (Reg. CEE 2092/91).
The company's organic farms cover approximately 600 hectares, some of which are owned and some leased, throughout different areas of Tuscan and Umbrian Valtiberina. The largest farmed area is a flat region (200 m.s.l.m. around) in which species that thrive in such conditions are cultivated and where the role of agricultural mechanization is key. This is the typical environment for chamomile, mallow, echinacea, flax, lemon balm, passion flower and others. In the hilly environs of Tosco-Romagna (from 400 to 750 m.s.l.m.) we have perennials such as grindelia, nettle, spiraea, rosemary, sage, thyme and ligneous species such as hawthorn, ash, witch hazel and others.
Approximately 60 species of medicinal herbs are cultivated on our lands, while another 20 species are wildcrafted by our employees.
The agricultural phase begins with the selection of seeds and starters with a view to their propagation and multiplication. If necessary, this can take place in specially created protected environments. Then follows working the fields, transplanting or direct seeding, fertilizing, irrigation, the control of insects and pathogens, harvesting and cleaning. The bulk of the harvesting is done with the use of specific machines, while a small portion is harvested by hand. After the harvest, the fresh product is sent to a climate-controlled setting during the drying phase. This is carried out with special equipment that dehydrates the product and locks in the active ingredients at the time of harvest. In compliance with the regulations of organic production, much attention is given to the controll of insects-mechanically and manually-to organic and mineral fertilization, to the rotation of crops, and to maintaining the fertility of the soil. Organic farming methods are regulated by the Consortium for the Control of Organic Products, authorized (www.ccpb.it) by regulation CEE 2092/91 for the control and certification of Organic Farming companies.
The method of organic agricultural production is characterized by the validation, through this same certifying body operating in compliance with the norms set out by the European Regulation, of all phases of operation involved in the production of agricultural products cultivated without the use of synthetic chemical substances or pesticides. Finally, a Quality Control Process guarantees the quality of the finished product by checking and certifying all steps of production. A fundamental agronomic goal is to obtain highly therapeutic medicinal herbs through the selection of specific varieties with the greatest content of active ingredients. Following the selection of genetically interesting varieties, the department of Research and Development studies the chemical properties of the varieties in question and thoroughly researches their various possible medicinal applications. The entire agricultural sector follows the norms of GAP (good agricultural practice), which allows for a clearer designation of the raw material. The guarantee of product quality is also provided by certificates of analysis with which all the specific data and properties of a predetermined species of medicinal herb are communicated. |
